The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has facilitated a peace forum addressing the issue of cattle raids taking place among communities in the Greater Liech area.
The two-day forum held in Wangkey in Mayom County drew more than 100 participants, including government officials, women, youth and leaders of faith-based groups from Rubkhona, Mayom, Guit and Koch.
The Governor in Bentiu, Dr. Joseph Manytuil Wejang, told the gathering that cattle rustling results in the death of many innocent civilians.
24 March 2017 – United Nations peacekeeping is becoming more agile and capable, the outgoing chief today said, even as the cost for each peacekeeper fell 16 per cent in recent years, dropping the entire budget of the blue helmets worldwide to around $7.2 billion.
“It’s a lot of money at face value, but it’s 0.4 per cent of world military expenditure,” Hervé Ladsous, the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, told journalists in New York during his final briefing in this post.

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 23 2017 (IPS) - A delegation of Libyan tribal leaders and women leaders has called on the UN to take a balanced approach to the Libyan peace process.
The delegation from the National Movement for Libya (NML) met with UN officials and U.S. government representatives while visiting New York and Washington D.C. to discuss the UN-led peace process in Libya.
The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, is deeply concerned by the recent escalation of fighting in Damascus, Hama and elsewhere in Syria.
He notes that the growing violations in recent days are undermining the ceasefire regime addressed through the Astana meetings, with significant negative consequences for the safety of Syrian civilians, humanitarian access and the momentum of the political process.

Today I devote my regular briefing to the Council on the Situation in the Middle East to reporting, on behalf of the Secretary-General, on the implementation of resolution 2334.
In this first report, I will focus on developments on the ground in accordance with the provisions of the resolution, including on regional and international efforts to advocate and advance the peace process.
Baqouba, Iraq, 25 March 2017 – The United Nations took its “Iraq: Youth and Coexistence” Forum to Diyala Governorate, hoping to enrich the discussions aimed at gauging the opinions of the young generation on reconciliation with experiences from an area that symbolizes diversity but one which has paid a heavy price from conflict and violence.
An UNDEF-funded project has just begun in war-torn Yemen to assist peacebuilding and promote democracy by empowering youth to participate more in civic life.
This project addresses challenges posed by ethnic and religious tensions. Implemented by the Khadija Foundation for Development, the project aims to build youth capacity by involving them in advocacy campaigns and raise civic awareness by creating youth networks. The goal is to engage youth on how to build peace beyond the life of the project.

A ceasefire agreement was reached on 19 March in the besieged neighbourhood of al-Waer in the central city of Homs. The deal is to be carried out within six to eight weeks, and entails the evacuation of residents and release of detainees. The first evacuation involved 1 400 persons (including 519 children) who arrived in Al-Bab-town and were transferred to Shamareq camp in Azaz. Humanitarian assistance is being provided to cover basic needs of the evacuated persons and protection monitoring.
