The State of Public Health in South Sudan: Critical Condition

Less than 18 months into its life as an independent nation, South Sudan is facing a desperate struggle for survival. Because the terms of its separation from Sudan were not decided before independence, negotiations have dragged on over issues including borders, security arrangements, and the qualifications for citizenship, diverting attention from the urgent task of development. Most damagingly, the two nations have failed to cooperate on oil production, the mainstay of their economies.

Horn of Africa Update June 2012

The February—May rainfall was characterized by a late onset and mixed performance throughout the horn of Africa (HoA). Exceptionally heavy rains and the consiquential flooding In western areas contrasted sharply with large rainfall deficits in eastern areas, including the eastern half of Kenya, parts of southern Somalia, northeastern Ethiopia, and northwestern Uganda. These rains led to a generally improved regional food security situation. However, several areas are still in Crisis and Emergency food insecurity situation (IPC Phase 3 and 4respectively).

Mid-Year Review of the Consolidated Appeal for the Republic of South Sudan 2012

  1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The first half of 2012 has seen the continuation of unresolved issues between Sudan and South Sudan as well as the emergence of new challenges. Some of these challenges were anticipated in the most likely planning scenario developed for 2012, while other challenges have far exceeded expectations, further worsening the humanitarian situation to the extent that in several areas some of the worst- case scenario triggers have already occurred.
