CERF provides $1.6 million for shelter and temporary schooling for earthquake-affected populations in Bhutan

5 October 2011: The Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has provided US$1,605,535 in life-saving funds for earthquake-affected populations in Bhutan.

More than 8,000 households have been affected by the earthquake, with the total collapse or major damage reported to 845 houses, 110 schools, 36 hospitals and health units and religious structures. An estimated 40,035 people have been directly affected with 4,225 persons displaced from their homes since the 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck on 18 September 2011.

Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation - Nepal 200136 Food Assistance to Refugees from Bhutan

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Bhutanese refugees began entering Nepal in the early 1990s following the enforcement of restrictive citizenship laws by the Government of Bhutan. In 1992, at the request of the Government of Nepal, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and WFP started providing food, shelter, and non-food assistance. Despite ongoing discussions since 1993, no progress has been made between the Governments of Nepal and Bhutan in either repatriating the refugees to Bhutan or integrating them in Nepal.

CERF Advisory Group meets to discuss Fund management and operations

On 2 and 3 November, the CERF Advisory Group met in New York. During the meeting, the Advisory Group received a brief from the Emergency Relief Coordinator on the use of the Fund in 2009. The Advisory Group expressed a high level of support for the use and management of the Fund.

Executive Summary

Nepal is one of the world's poorest nations with a Gross Domestic Product per capita of $1,420. Poverty and food insecurity remain widespread in rural areas; and have been exacerbated by conflict and natural disasters (drought, flooding) in recent years. In addition to these difficulties, more than 100,000 refugees fled from Bhutan to Nepal in the early 1990s.

European Commission approves €5.75 million for crises in Asia

Brussels, 04 August 2004 - The European Commission has adopted three humanitarian aid packages totalling €5.75 million for the victims of 'forgotten' crises in Nepal (€2 million), India (€2 million) and East Timor/Indonesia (€1.75 million).
