Overview

In line with Strategy 2020 of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Moldova Red Cross Strategic Plan 2010-2015, the priority directions that the National Society established for 2012 were the following:

  • Disseminate humanitarian values and fundamental principles of the Movement.

  • Implement anti-trafficking programme, including promoting social cohesion and addressing discrimination and exclusion.

Moldova: Floods DREF operation n° MDRMD003 Final report

Summary: CHF 188,100 was allocated from the International Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 8,000 beneficiaries from approximately 2,000 families.

Heavy rains and flooding in July 2010 have directly affected 12,000 people in Moldova. A total of 3,183 houses in 16 districts: Briceni, Edinet, Criuleni, Hincesti, Ungheni, Soroca, Rezina,Soldanesti, Bender, Cahul, Cantemir, Glodeni, Riscani, Ocnita, Dubasari, Leova (85 settlements) had been flooded, out of which most are destroyed.

Executive summary

After 18 years of Moldovan independence, many things have passed and emotions have calmed, though the pain of those who lost their relatives and close friends on both sides of the Transnistrian conflict in 1992 has not yet subsided. This circumstance has a negative impact on the economic development of the country, and first of all on the social sphere.

Executive summary

Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, according to the World Bank. Poverty and vulnerability is pronounced in rural areas and among older people. Pensions and wages have increased by 20 per cent on average, but still have little bearing or significant influence on the vulnerability level of people as prices rise even more steeply.

This Emergency Appeal seeks CHF 1,250,355 (USD 1,193,428 or EUR 765,881) in cash, kind, or services to support the Moldovan and Ukrainian National Red Cross Societies to assist 60,000 beneficiaries for eight months.

A total of CHF 636,942 was allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF), to support the initial phase of operations in Ukraine (CHF 437,942) and Moldova (CHF 199,000) respectively. Unearmarked funds to replenish DREF are encouraged.

Severe drought alters the face of poverty in Moldova

PLOP-STIUBEI VILLAGE, Moldova - A cold, autumnal drizzle fell outside as 15 women huddled around an improvised electric plate in a small room in the Healthcare Centre in this small village in the Causeni rayon (or district). - Moldova's 2007 drought has been the most severe in living memory; however, it represents the extreme manifestation of a trend to drier weather conditions, which started in the early 1990s.

Northwest medical teams ships emergency medical supplies and food to Moldova

Northwest Medical Teams will send two 40-foot containers of medical supplies and food to Moldova, where the severest ice storms since World War II have broken power lines and poles. One million people in the northern third of the country are without power, heat or water.
