HIGHLIGHTS

Total number of Syrian refugees registered and awaiting registrations with UNHCR in Egypt stands at 66,420 individuals as of 13th of May 2013.

On Wednesday the 8th of May 2013, a fund raising event for the aid of Syrian refugees, took place at the Cairo Opera House. The event was organized by the British Embassy and UNHCR and was under the patronage of the Secretary General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi.

WFP Helping Burundi’s Fight Against Malnutrition

At Gakere health centre in the northern province of Ngozi, the World Food Programme is providing vital food supplements to malnourished pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under five.

Little Cécile weighed 2.70 kgs at birth in 2010. As time passed, her mother, Vénancie Sinzotuma, noticed that her youngest daughter was not growing normally. As soon as Cécile’s mother learned from a neighbour that WFP had a special feeding programme at Gakere, she did not hesitate.

UNICEF reaches some of the heaviest conflict areas in Syria [EN/AR]

DAMASCUS/AMMAN/GENEVA, 17 May 2013 – Despite heavy fighting, UNICEF and partners have provided life-saving supplies over the last week to some of the hardest to reach areas in Syria, including Aleppo and Al Houla, as well as children and women who fled recent violence in Al Bayda and Baniyas.

UNICEF and partners reached Zamarin and surrounding areas, on the outskirts of Tartous, which is hosting some 6,000 women and children who fled the nearby villages of Al Bayda and Baniyas, where mass killings have reportedly taken place this month.

The shortage of trained nurses at government hospitals is stifling progress in the fight against the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mothers to babies.

This was revealed by the AIDS and TB Director in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Owen Mugurungi, at a roundtable discussion in the capital today.

Mugurungi said increasing the number of health staff would help drive success in the current Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission initiatives.

Landmark reached in fight against tetanus, as over half of 59 priority countries declare victory, partners say

NEW YORK, 15 May 2013 – Tetanus, one of the most deadly diseases a mother and her newborn can face, has been eliminated in over half of 59 priority countries, the Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination Initiative partners announced today.

Tetanus kills one newborn baby every nine minutes and almost all of these babies are born in poor families living in the most disadvantaged areas and communities.

Highlights

UNHCR began on 06 May 2013, the relocation of 18,200 Sudanese refugees from flood prone Jamam refugee camp, to the new site, Kaya, ahead of the onset of this year’s seasonal rains.

Clashes between host and refugee communities in Doro camp illustrate the possible threat of civil unrest across Maban. Efforts are underway to bring the two communities together.

Over 95% of refugee children have been immunized during the national polio immunization campaign this month.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), in cooperation with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNCHR) and the Danish Red Cross, is supporting a project to provide a range of services, including child protection and psychosocial support, in areas affected by conflict. Dr Abdul Rahman Attar, President of SARC, stressed the importance of the project, which was launched in June 2012 under the umbrella of the Refugee Project and led by Ms Mouna Kurdi.

Girls and women are vital to progress in Nigeria

Lynne Featherstone launches a new programme to improve the prospects of girls and women in Nigeria

High rates of maternal mortality and violence against women make Nigeria one of the toughest places in the world to be born a girl, Lynne Featherstone said in Abuja today.

The International Development minister made the comments after announcing a new £39 million UK programme which will work with over 120,000 girls as well as local and religious leaders to shift attitudes towards women in the country.
