• El año 2012 cerró con señales positivas para la región en materia de crecimiento económico, ya que América Latina y el Caribe se expandió 3,1% en el año, muy por sobre las economías avanzadas. Para 2013, en tanto, se espera un crecimiento de 3,6%.

• El índice de precios internacionales de los alimentos de la FAO mostró una reducción de 7% en 2012, como consecuencia de bajas generalizadas en todos los grupos de alimentos y especialmente del azúcar, los lácteos y los aceites y grasas.

Women in conflict and transitional countries take centre stage

Funds allocated received by more than 350 initiatives in 128 countries in 16-year history

New York, 7 November—The United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) today kicked off its 16th year announcing more than US$8 million in grants to 12 local initiatives in 18 countries. In ten countries, funds will be used to address violence against women in conflict, post conflict and transitional settings, including Libya for the first time.

PAHO/WHO celebrates World Health Day with the theme: Good health adds life to years

Every year, World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. The topic of World Health Day in 2012 is Ageing and Health with the theme: Good health adds life to years. The issue gains more importance as within the next five years, the number of adults aged 65 and over will outnumber children under the age of 5.

Programme outcome: the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies‘ secretariat (IFRC) is committed to supporting the National Societies to do more, do better and reach further in order to address the humanitarian challenges faced by the Red Cross Societies in the Americas. The support provided by the IFRC‘s Americas zone office focuses on mainstreaming compliance with the Inter-American Plan and working towards full alignment with the IFRC‘s Strategy 2020.

25 October 2011 – United Nations aid agencies are ramping up their efforts to provide shelter, food and health care to El Salvador, which is facing one of the greatest disasters in its history as heavy rains continue to cause severe flooding across Central America.
