CIUDAD DE PANAMÁ, 22 de abril de 2013 – Bajo el lema ‘Vacunación: una responsabilidad compartida’, este fin de semana comenzó la 11ª edición de la Semana de la Vacunación en las Américas. Hasta el próximo 27 de abril, esta iniciativa se plantea como objetivo inmunizar a más de 44 millones de niños y adultos que viven en 44 países de la región que este año participan en la campaña.

  • El año 2012 cerró con señales positivas para la región en materia de crecimiento económico, ya que América Latina y el Caribe se expandió 3,1% en el año, muy por sobre las economías avanzadas. Para 2013, en tanto, se espera un crecimiento de 3,6%.

  • El índice de precios internacionales de los alimentos de la FAO mostró una reducción de 7% en 2012, como consecuencia de bajas generalizadas en todos los grupos de alimentos y especialmente del azúcar, los lácteos y los aceites y grasas.

Funds allocated received by more than 350 initiatives in 128 countries in 16-year history

New York, 7 November—The United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) today kicked off its 16th year announcing more than US$8 million in grants to 12 local initiatives in 18 countries. In ten countries, funds will be used to address violence against women in conflict, post conflict and transitional settings, including Libya for the first time.

The topic of World Health Day in 2012 is Ageing and Health with the theme: Good health adds life to years. The issue gains more importance as within the next five years, the number of adults aged 65 and over will outnumber children under the age of 5.

PAHO/WHO EOC Situation Report #5 - Floods in Central America

Summary – Hurricane Rina

Rina is expected to reach the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico by Thursday as a category 1 hurricane.
Strong winds are anticipated in the northeast coast of the peninsula from north of Punta Gruesa to San Felipe, producing 8 to 16 inches of rain. A hazardous storm surge may raise water levels by 2 to 4 feet above normal tide in the coast. High winds will also likely affect the northern coast of Belize, including Belize City, and the Honduran Bay islands of Roatan and Guanaja.

La problemática del agua y la importancia de dotar a toda la población de este vital recurso, así como la seguridad social y la compra de medicamentos, fueron algunos de los temas tratados durante la reunión del sector salud de Centroamérica y República Dominicana (RESSCAD).

El ministro de Salud, Franklin Vergara, quien presidió esta XXVII reunión, como país anfitrión y que mantiene la presidencia Pro Tempore, explicó que Panamá esta muy bien desde el punto de vista de la salud pública, por el control y manejo que se tiene en cuanto a las enfermedades contagiosas.
