Outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases reported in South

BANGKOK, 20 May 2013 (NNT) - Southern residents are being warned of Chikungunya and dengue fever viruses, which can both be transmitted through a mosquito bite, while more than 200 dengue patients have been reported in Trang province.

According to Director-General of the Department of Medical Sciences Dr. Nipon Phopattanachai, patients found to have contracted the Chikungunya virus are mostly in the southern provinces of Trang, Satun, Chumphon and Surat Thani, and the infection rate is rising sharply.

Public Health Min to stop spread of Malaria in 7 years

BANGKOK, 6 May 2013 (NNT)-The Ministry of Public Health is aiming to stop the outbreak of Malaria in Thailand within the next 7 years after nearly 2,500 people have been found with the disease so far this year.

According to Public Health Minister Dr. Pradit Sintawanarong, the Ministry has launched a campaign to stop the outbreak of Malaria permanently in 80% of the country’s total areas. Under the scheme, health examination services have been provided in the area where contraction of Malaria has been reported whilst those with infections will be treated on the spot.

33 people die of dengue fever during Jan 1 to April 30

BANGKOK, 2 May 2013 (NNT) – The Disease Control Department (DDC) has reported that 33 people have died of dengue fever, while trying to raise public awareness of the disease.

The Department of Disease Control under the Public Health Ministry has hosted an event to raise awareness of dengue fever.

According to Disease Control Department Director-General Pornthep Siriwanarangsan, over 26,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported during January 1st to April 30th; 33 of the patients died.

Public donations topped $3 million last year, including a record Lent total of more than $900,000. We are grateful for the government’s New Zealand Aid Programme which contributed almost $1 million towards Caritas development and relief programmes.

Gene clues point to Cambodia for resistant malaria

PARIS, April 28, 2013 (AFP) - Gene analysis of malaria parasites has pinpointed western Cambodia as the hotspot of strains that are dangerously resistant to artesiminin, the frontline drug against the disease, scientists said on Sunday.

An international consortium of researchers unravelled the genetic code of 825 samples of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite from Burkina Faso, Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Thailand, Vietnam and from northeastern and western Cambodia.

RCA allocates over Dh 4 million to implement developmental projects

The Higher Committee of Foreign aid at the Red Crescent Authority has allocated Dh 4.027 million to carry out developmental projects in a number of countries.

The assistance will cover health, education and social services sectors in addition to the provision of water supplies in areas which suffer from shortage of this vital service.

These projects will be carried out in a number of countries, including Palestine, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Jordan and Pakistan, Senegal, Bosnia, Uganda, Benin, Thailand, Chad, in addition to Ghana, Lebanon, Libya and Mauritania.

Public Health Ministry worried over possible dengue epidemic during rainy season

BANGKOK, 22 April 2013 (NNT) – The Public Health Ministry is getting worried about a possible dengue fever epidemic during this year’s rainy season.

Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said that, since the beginning of the year, there have been more than 20,000 dengue patients, 24 of them killed by the virus.

Ban Mae Surin ‐ Emergency Response Humanitarian Agencies Situation Report Up‐date # 13 ‐‐‐ 17 April 2013

On Friday 22nd March a massive fire broke out in the Ban Mae Surin refugee Temporary Shelter located in Khun Yuam District, Mae Hong Son Province. The incident left 37 dead and others seriously injured, and completely ravaged two sections of the camp destroying the homes and limited possessions of 2,300 refugees (more than half of the entire population). This situation report presents the joint humanitarian response, up‐dates on the priority requirements, and indicates the agreed actions.

Public Health Ministry worried about possible dengue epidemic after Songkran

BANGKOK, 8 April 2013 (NNT) – The Public Health Ministry is worried that the country may be hit by a dengue virus epidemic after the Songkran celebrations are over.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Sopon Mekthon, as the chair of the ministry’s anti-dengue war room, said on Sunday that, during the past 2 weeks, there have been around 2,000 more dengue patients reported across the country.

He said the latest records show a slight decline from the months before, highly likely because of the summer school break.

Satun Province steps up its anti dengue fever campaign.

SATUN, 1 April 2013 (NBT) - The southern province of Satun has stepped up its anti dengue fever campaign to cut a chance for the spread of the mosquito-borne viral infections this summer.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health, Dr. Nitat Raiyawa, has recently presided over the launching of the Anti Dengue Fever Public Relations Campaign in Satun Province.

Deputy Satun Governor Prayun Rattanasenee revealed that since the beginning of this year the province already has 42 residents infected with the disease, most of them are in the district district of La-ngu.

BMA warns city residents against dengue risk and outbreak

BANGKOK, 29 March 2013 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is warning the city residents to beware of possible dengue outbreak and to exterminate all mosquito-breeding sites around them.

The BMA’s Health Department Director Dr. Wantanee Wattana revealed on Thursday that there continue to be more dengue patients in Bangkok lately.

Public Health Ministry: 55 refugee camp fire survivors suffer mental problems

BANGKOK, 27 March 2013 (NNT) – The Public Health Ministry has confirmed that a number of survivors from last week’s fire accident at a refugee camp in northern Mae Hong Son have suffered mental health problems.

Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said on Wednesday that the government assistance to those who survived the inferno at the Baan Mae Surin refugee camp, particularly health and medical help, has been continuously carried out since March 22.

Death toll in Thailand refugee camp fire reaches 37; UNHCR aids victims

BANGKOK, Thailand, March 26 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency said on Tuesday that the death toll from a fire that swept through a refugee camp on Thailand's border with Myanmar has risen to 37, while 2,300 refugees have been left homeless.

The fire broke out in Ban Mae Surin camp in Mae Hong Son province on Friday afternoon. It spread quickly to destroy more than 400 homes, a school, clinic, warehouse, community facilities as well as government and aid agency offices. Refugees with serious burns have been taken to local hospitals.
