OFID Governing Board approves new loans and grants to boost socio-economic development

Vienna, Austria, June 17, 2013. The Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), meeting in its 143rd Session on June 13, has approved 17 loans and grants totaling over US$234 million to boost socio-economic development in over 44 partner countries. The majority of the public sector funding will co-finance transportation, energy and water supply and sanitation projects.

Meningococcal disease: 2013 epidemic season in the African Meningitis Belt

6 JUNE 2013 - From 1 January to 12 May 2013 (epidemiologic week 19), 9 249 suspected cases of meningitis, including 857 deaths, with a case fatality ratio of 9.3 percent, have been reported from 18 of the 19 African countries under enhanced surveillance1 for meningitis. The number of cases reported so far are the lowest recorded during the epidemic season in the last ten years2.

Outbreaks of the meningococcal disease have been confirmed in Guinea and South Sudan, where 404 suspected cases3 (38 deaths) and 196 suspected cases (13 deaths) have respectively been notified.

New Financing Agreements between the IDB and Number of Member Countries for USD231 Million

On the occasion of the 38th Annual Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors held in Dushanbe, Republic of Tajikistan, a number of financing agreements have been signed under which the Bank shall participate in financing new development projects in (10) member countries (in addition to the Republic of Kosovo) for a total amount of USD230.9 million , The details are as follows:

Loan for USD10 million, to participate in phase-3 in the Dangara Valley Irrigation Project with the objective of poverty reduction among the population.

ECOWAS seeks greater collaboration with UNFPA on humanitarian issues

ECOWAS has called for more support from the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) for effective implementation of the region’s gender, child and humanitarian policies.

The Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Toga McIntosh told a visiting delegation led by the fund’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa Mr. Benot Kalasa, that the organization "is desirous of working with you in this area and facilitating project implementation and coordination for greater impact."

  • A wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case has been confirmed in Kenya, the first WPV in the country since July 2011, with onset of paralysis 30 April. The location is a refugee camp in the Dadaab area, close to the border with Somalia, where a child was paralysed by polio near the capital Mogadishu on 18 April. Outbreak response activities are being planned. See ‘Horn of Africa’ section for more.

CRS to distribute 3 million treated mosquito nets in Guinea

BALTIMORE, MD, May 20, 2013 – Today, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and its partners will start a campaign to distribute more than 3 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets throughout the West African nation of Guinea. The effort is part of a nationwide campaign with the aim to provide one bed net for every two people in Guinea, a country with a population of 11 million.

Guinée : au moins 40 morts dans une épidémie de méningite depuis janvier

CONAKRY, 25 avr 2013 (AFP) - Au moins 40 personnes sont mortes depuis janvier en Guinée, victimes d'une épidémie de méningite touchant une grande partie du pays, a appris jeudi l'AFP auprès du ministère de la Santé.

379 cas ont été détectés dans 19 des 33 préfectures du pays, dont sa capitale Conakry, selon un rapport du ministère.

Un précédent rapport publié fin mars avait fait état d'au moins 28 morts depuis janvier à la suite de cette épidémie de méningite de type cérébro-spinal.
