UNICEF extends its activities to conflict-affected children in West Cote d'Ivoire

Abidjan, 1st June 2003 -- The recent securization process offers new perspectives to assist and protect children and women affected by conflict in the western part of Cote d'Ivoire. For the past two months, UNICEF has been in the field through the inter-agency sub-office, opened jointly with WFP in Man and with UNHCR in Guiglo.
On 30 May, UNICEF delivered relief supplies to Man, Guiglo, and Daloa. To Man, drugs were supplied for 300,000 persons. In Daloa, drugs supplied will benefit 200,000 persons. In Guiglo, five motorbikes were handed over. In addition, among the three locations, 2,000

During this reporting period, the Israeli Army continued to violate the First and Fourth Geneva Conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by denying freedom of movement to Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) ambulances and its medical teams, who suffered threats by gunfire, humiliation, verbal abuse, and physical assaults. Delays, denial of access, and arbitrary searches adversely affected the sick and wounded, in Nablus, Qalqiliya, Tulkarem, Jenin, Tubas, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jericho and Gaza.

Flooding prevents delivery of supplies from Kenya to South Sudan

Supplies of food and aviation fuel to Lokichoggio are blocked at two locations on the road north of Eldoret. Floods have destroyed a vital bridge at Ortum, between Marich Pass and Moribus, impeding the delivery of humanitarian supplies to northern Kenya and southern Sudan. Pressure is mounting on the Indonesian media to support the military offensive against GAM. Government is insisting that national integrity should come before press freedom. Minister of State for Communications and Information, Syamsul Mu'arif was quoted by Jakarta Post saying, "we ask the media to be wise. OCHA Humanitarian action in Chechnya and Neighbouring Republics (Russian Federetion) 16 - 31 May 2003

State Duma Approves First Reading of the Amnesty Bill for Chechnya

On 21 May, the State Duma approved first reading of the amnesty bill for Chechnya proposed by President Putin. According to the presidential representative at the State Duma, Alexandre Kotenkov, the presidential side recommended to give the document all three readings by June 6. In addition, the presidential envoy called for extending the amnesty deadline until 1 September. The amnesty is to cover persons who have committed socially dangerous offences within the administrative borders

UNICEF Somalia Review May 2003

Flooding in Central and Southern Somalia monitored, with support given to affected areas...

1. During May 2003, the upcoming parliamentary election campaigns increasingly involved the majority of political parties, the Parliament and Presidents' office, in various discussions and preparations. Several incidents were recorded, such as beating up or intimidation of political activists. The opposition forces, which remained disunited, accused the government and repressive police of inciting some of those incidents, but were also blaming each other for lack of sincerity, competence and commitment.

BAAG Afghanistan Monthly Review May 2003

Introduction
Afghanistan continues to present a strange juxtaposition of two divergent trends - an apparent process of normalisation alongside an unravelling of the state-building project. We thus see plans for the Standard Chartered Bank to open a branch in the capital and the Asian Development Bank calling for bids for a consortium to construct a gas pipeline across Afghanistan while armed attacks on the international community appear to be accelerating.

Overview
The government has announced an intention to look for external experts to help harness flood waters especially in the Lake Victoria Basin. Holland and China have been suggested as countries which could be approached for expertise owing to their success in controlling water.

The government wants to build dams in Budalang'i, Busia, to control flooding. But the country does not have a free hand because the Nile Basin Treaty binds countries not to dam waters in the catchment area owing to its importance as source of River Nile.

1. ORGANIZATION
The People in Need Foundation is a Prague-based non-governmental, non-profit organization founded shortly after the fall of communism in then Czechoslovakia. PINF is the largest indigenous NGO in the post-communist part of Europe. PINF has operated in the North Caucasus in 1994-95 and again since January 2000.

2. General situation

The constant insecurity in Chechnya has not changed with regular daily attacks and explosions, and, in May, with two major suicide blasts in relatively peaceful parts of the republic.

Three NGOs under Japan Platform have been performing medical support for refugee camps in Jordan border. BHN dispatched two communication specialists as IT support as follows:
-Mr. Tomoda, Working since February 18.
-Mr. Yamasaki: From April 1 to May 7.
Immediately after the end of the US/Iraq war, many Palestinian refugees who escaped from persecution in Iraq have been gathering. International Organization expressed his gratitude for Japan team who were ready for aid.

Humanitarian Situation in Angola - reporting period: 16-31 May 2003

Critical Issues
  • Humanitarian partners continue to receive reports of returnees moving from remote areas of return to locations where humanitarian operations are underway.

  • Partners have expressed concern about the nutritional status of demobilised soldiers and their family members remaining in Chingongo gathering area in Benguela Province.

  • The Huambo -- Kuito and Sambo -- Samboto roads are open to humanitarian partners following significant demining and verifying operations.

  • Food insecurity is a serious concern
