World Bank provides US$200 million to further enhance the quality of the Health Sector Services in Sri Lanka

WASHINGTON, March 27, 2013— The World Bank approved today a concessionary loan of US $ 200 million to Sri Lanka for the Second Health Sector Development Project (SHSDP) to help the Government of Sri Lanka upgrade the standards of performance of the public health system and enable it to better respond to the challenges of a middle income country.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The humanitarian response strategy JPA 2012 was reviewed and closed.

• The Government appreciated the good collaboration of the humanitarian community and the donors in resettling over 400,000 persons within three years.

• The humanitarian community stressed the importance of conducting multi-sectoral needs assessments to extend support to the most vulnerable when needs arise.

• Floods affected large part of the island in January.

Wanni resettled gets more assistance

On par with the 65th National Independence Day celebrations Sri Lanka Army donated gift packs worth one million rupees to the people in Kelebogaswewa in Wanni at a function held in this regard on 03rd February.

About 100 families were gifted with packs of dry ration during the function. More than 150 school children in the area were presented with gift packs including school bags, exercise books, school shoes and other schooling needs.

By the end of December 2012, 467,533 people (140,725 families) had returned to the Northern Province. This figure includes 267,865 people (80,292 families) displaced after April 2008 and 199,668 people (55,273 families) displaced before April 2008 1 .

All necessary measures taken to support flood victims

Several roads in the eastern and north central areas were flooded as heavy rains continued yesterday, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) sources said.

“The Batticaloa - Kattankudy, Manampitiya - Gallella and Sungawila - Somawathiya roads were inundated,” they said.

DMC sources said the extreme weather conditions displaced 456 people mainly in the North Central Province as landslide threats in some areas loomed large. Some people were evacuated on grounds of safety, they added.

CARE responds to recent floods and landslides

CARE is currently responding to the series of floods which have occurred across Sri Lanka over the past weeks. Heavy rainfall began around the 18th of December in several districts of the country, causing floods and landslides which have affected an estimated 380’000 people and damaged over 31’000 homes. For the affected regions in eastern and northern Sri Lanka this latest crisis has meant a grim end to an already difficult year: a ten-month drought began in February and lasted through much of 2012, and in early November Cyclone Nisha displaced almost 20’000 people.

Several provinces in the northern part of Sri Lanka are under water. DanChurchAid is prepared to provide food, mosquito nets and blankets to the many in need.

It has rained more than usual in the northern part of Sri Lanka since before Christmas. The rain has caused the rivers to go over their banks and created big landslides.

More than 350.000 people are affected by the situation and 3.000 are living in evacuation centres.

A serious situation created by floods and strong winds in Sri Lanka has still continuing and affected nearly 328,000 people in 10 out of 25 districts in Sri Lanka in the provinces of Sabaragamuwa, North, East, West, Uva, Central, South, North Central and East. So far the floods have claimed 45 lives and 8 disappearances have been reported up to today. Two deaths, due to drowning, were reported from Pundaluoya and Hali-ella on Jan. 8 - 2013.

MAMADUWA/COLOMBO, 11 January 2013 (IRIN) - Recent extreme weather in Sri Lanka is likely to intensify the vulnerability of the poorest living in the country’s hardest hit northern and eastern regions, experts warn.

The Northern, North Central, Eastern and Uva (in the southeast) provinces experienced weeks of heavy rains starting on 16 December.

Muslim Aid assists flood victims in Sri Lanka

In December 2012, more than 300,000 people were affected in 15 districts in Sri Lanka due to severe weather conditions with floods and landslides in many parts of the island. Many of those who were displaced due to the inclement weather have returned to their homes. However, some are still dependent on the assistance given to them, as life is slowly getting back in order.

Muslim Aid Sri Lanka distributed food and non food items to those affected which included:
