Kenya: Floods Emergency appeal Operation update n°1 - MDRKE025

Appeal target (current): The floods emergency appeal seeks to raise CHF 3,538,548 in cash, kind or services to support Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) to assist an estimated 52,183 beneficiaries for a six months period.

Appeal coverage: 9% So far the appeal has received both hard and soft pledges and commitments from PNS, UN agencies, developmental and private partners.

UNHCR Dadaab Update 6/13, 16 April - 15 May 2013

New developments

Registration resumed

On 8 May, the Department of Refugee Affairs (DRA) reopened registration of asylum seekers. This means that some 4,000 persons who have arrived to Dadaab since the closure of the latest two-week registration window on 30 November 2012 will now be registered and get access to services.

In Summary

  • The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is working with the government to establish shelter and boost livelihoods for some returnees expected to be back in the country before the clause comes into effect.

As the UN Cessation Clause comes into effect some Rwf2 billion has been earmarked to support Rwandan refugees who are set to return to their motherland.

Appeal history:

 This Emergency Appeal was launched on 14 March 2012 for 503,659 Swiss francs to assist 2,000 families (10,000 beneficiaries) for 6 months.

 Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF): 116,138 Swiss francs were initially allocated from the Federation’s DREF to support the Bolivian Red Cross (BRC) to respond.

Shabunda: une ONG distribue des vivres et non vivres aux victimes de violences sexuelles

L’ONG Guichet local économique du Sud-Kivu (GL) apporte, depuis le week-end dernier, des vivres et non vivres à plus de 150 femmes victimes des violences sexuelles, à Shabunda-centre (Sud-Kivu). La coordonnatrice de cette organisation citoyenne, Rachel Fidelie, a déclaré le lundi 20 mai que ces femmes reçoivent des sacs de poissons salés, des ballots de vêtements usagers, des chèvres et des porcs. Selon elle, cette assistance s’inscrit dans le cadre de l’accompagnement de ces personnes pour leur réinsertion sociale.

UNHCR Turkey Syrian Refugee Daily Sitrep 20 May 2013

Highlights

• On 19 May 2013, AFAD - the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency of Government of Turkey announced that the total number of Syrians registered and accommodated in 17 camps in 8 provinces has increased to 194,715 including 336 Syrians receiving medical treatment in hospitals.

• AFAD reported that between 17-19 May, 1,699 new arrival Syrians were registered and accommodated in the camps while 1758 Syrians voluntarily returned to Syria. This brought the weekly total of Syrians accepted into camps as 3,013 people and departures from camps to 2,188 people.

Egypt Weekly Update Syrian Operation May 7th – May 13th 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

Total number of Syrian refugees registered and awaiting registrations with UNHCR in Egypt stands at 66,420 individuals as of 13th of May 2013.

On Wednesday the 8th of May 2013, a fund raising event for the aid of Syrian refugees, took place at the Cairo Opera House. The event was organized by the British Embassy and UNHCR and was under the patronage of the Secretary General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi.

UNHCR Somalia Operational Highlights 6-12 May 2013

Political and Security South-central:

On 6 May, Al Shabab fighters ambushed the Raskambooni police base in Dobley town.
The armed clashes lasted more than half an hour and one Raskambooni soldier died during the attack and three others were seriously injured. Two days later, the militants launched another hit and run attack against the Somali government forces manning a checkpoint at Shaqalaha neighborhood on the exit road to Afmadow west of Kismayo.

No casualties were reported. Tension remains high in Dobley and its surrounding areas.

Philippines: Humanitarian Bulletin - Issue 16, 18 April – 17 May 2013

Families still live in evacuation centers or ‘tent cities’ and in spontaneous settlements in tents or makeshift emergency shelters. The humanitarian appeal is less than half funded.
