Improving incentives to expand wheat production in Ethiopia

SUMMARY

In most of the years analysed, farmers received prices that were lower than what they would have obtained with better market access or more favourable domestic policies (Figure 1).

However, farm gate prices started increasing in 2005 and price incentives (relative to international prices) improved following the global food price spikes of 2008. Farmers thus increased production based on their perception of improving prices.

Wheat and rice prices mostly fall around the region

Strong production generally kept domestic prices around the region stable or drove them slightly down for wheat, wheat flour and rice, except in India and Myanmar where government procurement programmes pushed prices higher. Overall, however, prices were mostly higher than at the same time last year, according to FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS).

Strong biosecurity measures needed to contain bird flu Implementing strong biosecurity measures coupled with good hygiene are required to contain the spread of the H7N9 strain of avian influenza virus, Hiroyuki Konuma, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific told a press conference in Bangkok on April 11. The virus had infected 82 people and killed 17 in China by April 19.

Slow Food and FAO join forces

Three-year agreement to target smallholders, biodiversity

15 May 2013, Rome - FAO and the international Slow Food organization agreed today to develop joint actions to improve the livelihoods of smallholders and others working in rural areas.

Under a three-year Memorandum of Agreement signed here the two organizations will join forces to promote more inclusive food and agriculture systems at local, national and international levels.

Global Food Price Monitor - May 2013

  • Export prices of maize fell markedly in April. International wheat prices followed mixed trends with US quotations unchanged but those from the Black Sea and Argentina significantly down. Rice prices generally weakened.

  • In Western Africa, cereal prices in Nigeria increased sharply in recent months, leading to higher domestic prices also in bordering Niger and Benin.
