Red Cross responds to Cayman Islands hurricane

As Hurricane Paloma batters the Cayman Islands, the British Red Cross has released an initial =A315,000 to help provide people affected with food and shelter.

Paloma, a Category Four storm with winds approaching 140 mph, hit the Cayman Islands on 8 November, causing serious flooding and other damage.

The British Red Cross donation, from the organisation's Disaster Fund, will be spent on tarpaulins to help give temporary shelter for those whose homes have been damaged by the storms, as well as food and water for people in hurricane shelters.

Caribbean Hurricane Season: OCHA Situation Report No. 25

HIGHLIGHTS

- Tropical Storm Paloma is now a Category 1 hurricane and is heading towards the Cayman Islands and Cuba.

- In Haiti, humanitarian efforts continue in Baie d'Orange, in the South-East commune of Belle Anse, following the identification of a pocket of severe malnutrition on 28-29 October by Oxfam GB and Terre des Hommes. In Grande Anse, five people died because of flooding on 27 and 28 October.

Red Cross launches urgent Caribbean hurricane appeal

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched an appeal for 1.8 million Swiss francs (1.6 million US dollars or 1.1 million euro) to support the disaster response efforts of Red Cross societies in Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Cayman Islands.

The societies are responding to a humanitarian emergency caused by a devastating series of storms including hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike.

This Preliminary Emergency Appeal seeks CHF 1,778,824 (USD 1,617,113 or EUR 1,101,314) in cash, kind, or services to support the Cuban, Haitian and Jamaican National Societies to assist 7,000 families for six months.

CHF 25,000 (USD 23,809 or EUR 15,291) was allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 26 August, 2008 to support the National Society in Haiti in starting their early damage and need assessments on the damages caused by Hurricane Gustav. Hurricane Gustav OCHA Situation Report No. 4

This situation report is based on information received from, the UN Emergency Technical Team (UNETT) in the affected countries, the Regional Office in Panama and the National Hurricane Centre.

HIGHLIGHTS

- Tropical storm "Gustav" has today become a category 2 hurricane and has claimed the lives of 94 people in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. It has earlier become a category 4 when hitting Cuba earlier.

- Jamaica reported 12 deaths, while Haiti now reports 76 deaths.

- Assessments are on going in the various affected countries to decide on assistance if needed.
