Humanitarian aid for Syria and the Sahel

Acting on a proposal by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nickolay Mladenov, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria has approved the granting of 100 000 leva humanitarian aid to some of the most destitute regions in the world.

Miles de familias se enfrentan grandes dificultades para asegurar unas condiciones de vida adecuadas en sus hogares.

Race against time amidst freezing temperatures in Europe

The plight of thousands of people continues in Europe where forecasters say that icy conditions are unlikely to improve before the end of this week. In the last 11 days, several Red Cross societies have been in a race against time to reduce the impact of the extreme cold. Estimates so far suggest 389 have died, and official sources say the winter has been the most brutal in decades.

With temperatures expected to drop below -30 in Eastern and Central Europe this week the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has warned that thousands of homeless people are at risk. Over 80 people have already died in Poland and Ukraine. The sudden cold snap has affected a huge swathe of Europe, from southern Italy to Turkey, and north to Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Russia.

- Extremely hot temperatures and below normal rainfall across southeast Europe from June to August 2007 led to numerous wildfires in nearly every country in the region. Although wildfires are annual occurrences, and the local ecosystems are fire-adapted, the 2007 season was among the worst on record, according to national firefighting authorities and government officials.

Conor Lenihan announces €2 million humanitarian aid package

Conor Lenihan T.D., Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights, today announced details of a humanitarian aid package of just over €2 million, including assistance for Niger, Zimbabwe and North Korea.
In making the announcement Minister Lenihan said:

"This package of €2 million is spread over a range of different emergencies in three different continents in response to specific appeals. As a donor we have to look at where the needs are greatest and respond. This is what we are doing through this package."

EADRCC Situation Report No. 14 on the flood/Bulgaria


1. Situation update:
1.1 The "State of Disaster" declared by the Bulgarian authorities, remains in place in 4 municipalities and 2 districts in Sofia-City.

1.2 However, with reference to complicated situations and disasters all over Europe, the State Agency for Civil Protection on behalf of the Republic of Bulgaria has decided to cancel the request for assistance. They would like to express their gratitude to all nations and organisations that have provided assistance through the whole period.

Bulgaria: Deputy prime minister Emel Etem received today $ 400 000 donation for the floods victims

Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Disaster Management Minister Emel Etem received a donation of $ 400 000 for the people affected by the floods, from CARE International -- Bulgaria.

The funds were channeled into the purchase of 80 motor pumps of various capacity, 15 outboard-motor boats, 258 waterproof overalls, 50 chemical toilets, 48 electric saws and 22 sets of diving equipment, explained Deputy Prime Minister Emel Etem. She added that the population of the flood-hit regions will receive 5000 food packages, 42 060 liters

EADRCC Situation Report No. 12 on the flood/Bulgaria


1. Situation update:
1.1 The "State of Disaster" declared by the Bulgarian authorities, remains in place in 15 municipalities: Dolna Banya, Kostenets, Gorna Malina, Botevgrad, Svoge (Sofia District); the Municipalities of Novi Iskar and Vrabnitsa (Sofia-City District); the Municipalities of Belovo, Velingrad, Pazardzhik, Panagyurishte, Septemvri and Lisichevo (Pazardzhik District); the Chepelare Municipality (Smolyan District).

1.2 As a result of heavy rain, strong wind and hailstroms in different parts of the country, the situation remains of concern.

Bulgaria received over EUR 1 million in humanitarian aid

The country has so far received humanitarian aid amounting to EUR 1 050 740.
On 9 August, the Civil Protection Agency asked for international assistance in the recovery from the floods, caused by the heavy rains that hit the country. The message was sent to the member states of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council through the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) at NATO Headquarters and to the Civil Protection Directorate at the EC's Environment DG, through the EU Monitoring and Information Centre.

Japan's government sent humanitarian aid of USD 90 000

Today, Bulgaria received humanitarian aid, granted by Japan's government. The relief consists of 576 fifteen-liter plastic containers, 6 water tanks (3500 liters), 12 water purifying filters, estimated at USD 90 000 (JPY 10 M).

Bulgarian GSM company Mobiltel made another donation for the recovery from flood consequences. After the first donation, which amounted to BGN 100 000 (around EUR 50 000 ), today was signed a contract with the Civil protection Agency, of BGN 500 000 ( EUR 250 000). Provision of financial aid by Greece to the flood victims in the Bulgarian regions

Information Department Wednesday, 10 August 2005 - Foreign Ministry's International Development Cooperation Department (Hellenic Aid), on a decision by Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Evripidis Stylianidis, responsible for issues of International Developmental Cooperation and Aid, approved the provision of 50.000 euros to Bulgaria as aid by Greece for the flood victims in the regions of Sofia, Plovdiv Pazardzhik, Smolyan, Vratsa and Montana for the purchase of water pumps, bed sheets, clothing, footwear, food and potable water.
