European Union announces a €13.5 million grant to improve education and nutrition for Zimbabwe’s children

Harare, 21 May, 2013: The European Union has today announced a €13 million (US$17 million) grant to the second phase of the Education Transition Fund and an additional €500,000 (USD 640,000) from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) to nutrition activities in the country.

UN Supports Government of Zimbabwe in Tackling Food and Nutrition Insecurity

**Harare - Persistent hunger and under-nutrition continue to be major obstacles to development and economic growth in Zimbabwe, especially among the poor. A third of Zimbabwe’s children between six months and five years are short for their age and hence more prone to disease. The United Nations, through its specialist agencies- WFP, UNICEF, WHO and FAO - has supported the development of the Food and Nutrition Security Policy for Zimbabwe.

Officiating at the launch of the country’s food and nutrition security plan in Harare, President Mugabe urged international development partners to support Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector to improve productivity and promote self-reliance.

Comoros: Flash Flooding

On Grande Comore island, heavy rains between 30 April and 1 May caused some rivers to overflow. An estimated 172 families were affected, of which 82 families had to stay with community members. Some affected people have already started returning to their homes. Government, with support from partners, is assisting those affected. A request for international assistance is not expected.

$32 Million USAID Program Boosts Zimbabwe Agriculture, Traders

WASHINGTON DC — In 2010, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the Zimbabwe Agricultural Income and Employment Development programme (ZIM-AIED) aimed at increasing the incomes of rural households in Zimbabwe through commercialization of small-scale farming.

The program was also designed to generate new employment in agriculture and increasing the production of both food and cash crops.

Political tensions and intolerance remained heightened across the country in the early days of December 2012 dropping significantly in the last two weeks of December when the festive spirit gripped the nation as the Christmas and New Year holidays beckoned. The major sources of conflict in December 2012 were the partisan distribution of agricultural inputs and food under the Presidential inputs scheme which spilled over from November and political parties’ preparations for decisive general elections- which were then rumoured to be slated for early 2013.
