Germany Contributes €15 Million To WFP Food Assistance For Syrian Refugees

GAZIANTEP – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a generous contribution of €15 million (US$20 million) from the Government of Germany that will help provide critical food assistance to tens of thousands of Syrian refugees who fled the fighting in Syria. The latest contribution brings total German support to WFP’s Syria emergency operations to close to €25 million (US$33 million).

REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Since January 2013, there have been 200,000 new refugees every month, seeking refuge in neighbouring countries and North Africa. This number is expected to increase to 3.5 million refugees by the end of this year.

  • More than $2 billion of extra funding is needed to protect and meet the basic needs of those who have fled Syria (including 100,000 Palestine refugees), those still expected to flee, and 1.8 million people from communities that are hosting refugees.

Syria Crisis Bi-Weekly Humanitarian Situation Report - Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey, 1 - 12 June 2013

Highlights

The violence inside Syria continues to escalate with UNOHCHR reporting that the number of deaths due to the conflict has now reached over 93,000 since March 2011. Of these, 6,561 are children, of whom 1,729 are under the age of 10. During the reporting period, the UN launched a revised appeal for US$4.4bn for its response to the crisis. UNICEF requires some $470 million to the end of December to maintain its lifesaving support to the children of Syria.

WFP And Government Aim To Introduce Electronic Food Voucher In PDS

BAGHDAD – In a technical workshop starting today, the Government of Iraq and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) will discuss the potential introduction of electronic food vouchers in the Iraqi Public Distribution System (PDS). They will be joined by financial payments experts from MasterCard, the leading global technology and payments company, which, under a global partnership, is partnering with WFP to strengthen its delivery of “digital food,” in the form of vouchers.

IOCC relief expands reach to Syrian refugees in Iraq

A decade ago, they fled war in Iraq to find refuge in Syria. Now, as Syria's spreading civil conflict enters its third year, Iraqi refugee families that had settled in Syrian cities such as Aleppo and Damascus are forced to flee again. The number of Syrian refugees now living in Iraq has swelled to over 175,000 and continues to increase.
