Summary: CHF 195,002 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 5 December, 2010 to support the national society in delivering assistance to some 4,000 beneficiaries, or to replenish disaster preparedness stocks.

The floods that hit 11 governorates of the kingdom of Morocco on November 29, 2010 causing 32 deaths, thousands of homeless and property damage, were again a hard test for the vulnerable population.

The long rains in 2011 delayed and started towards the month of April as compared to 2010 where they started earlier towards the end of February. The number of days that received rainfall was also less in 2011 than 2010.

1.2 Food Security Trends

There was scarcity of major food staples since April resulting from the scarcity experienced in the whole country. This is indicated by the high prices experienced. However farmers have started harvesting the long rains crop which is expected to reduce the pressure

Located in the western side of Nyanza province, Kisumu west district covers an approximated area of about 360.8 km2 with an estimated population of about 149,831 people. The district has 2 divisions, 8 locations and 37 sub-locations. The divisions are Maseno and Kombewa. There are about 25,000 farm families.

Baisse progressive de l’indice des prix alimentaires

L’indice général a baissé de 5% entre avril et octobre 2011. Après le pic d’avril 2011 (138,1), l’indice des prix alimentaires a progressivement baissé pour finalement atteindre, en octobre, son plus bas niveau depuis le début de l’année 2011 (114,8). L’indice des prix non-alimentaires est, quant à lui, resté plus ou moins stable sur les dix premiers mois de l’année.

Drought Bulletin summary for the Month of OCTOBER 2011

October received less below normal rainfall with the onset of the dry season. There is increased yellowing and shedding of leaves among Desert dates and Neem. No more appearance of mushrooms and mosses was reported, which is normal at this time of the year. The prediction from the Meteorological Department for Kaabong district mentions that there is high chance of normal to above normal rainfall in November.
