WFP BEGINS FIRST FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS TO PAKISTAN FLOOD VICTIMS; FOOD SUPPLIES HIT

ISLAMABAD - The World Food Programme has today started food distributions to 35,000 families hit by catastrophic flooding in Northwestern Pakistan, which has also affected parts of neighbouring Afghanistan.

Distributions of emergency food supplies began on Sunday to 3,000 families in three of the worst affected districts - Peshawar, Nowshera and Charsadda - with the assistance of WFP's strong network of NGO partners in the region. The recent monsoon rains are reported to be the heaviest in living memory.

The worst affected areas are Nowshera, Charsada, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The rapid assessment mission headed by Mr. Martin Magwanja, Humanitarian Coordinator, visited Nowshera and Charsada district through Helicopter as there is no road accessibility to the districts. Due to bad weather the mission could not reach Swat and Shangla districts.

Situation Report No. 3: Monsoon Floods in Pakistan - 1 August 2010

This situation report is based on information received from UN Agencies, humanitarian partners and government sources.

SITUATION OVERVIEW

The worst floods to hit Pakistan since 1929 have left more than one million people in need of emergency assistance.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), the worstaffected province, the Provincial Government now puts the death toll at nearly 800 people, with more than 100 people still missing. The actual figures could be higher as communication networks in many areas are still disrupted.

Situation Report on Floods in Afghanistan Issue Number 01 - 1 August 2010

Summary

As of 30 July 2010, heavy rains, resulting in flash floods, have affected several areas in the country, most significantly in the Central and Eastern Regions. According to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), approximately, 3,831 households were reported to have been affected in the Eastern Region. As for the Central Region assessments are on-going, hence information gaps with regards to the impacts from the flooding still persist.

- During the week ending 29 July, the ADRA-IOM in Kosti tracked at total of 105 individuals transiting through this major hub in spontaneous movements to destinations mainly in Southern Kordofan (36%), Unity (32%), Upper Nile (20%) and Central Equatoria (10%). Return movements over the past two weeks have revealed small numbers that represent a significant decrease since heavy rains have begun falling in the north. At the close of the period, a total of 52 individuals were at the wharf in Kosti awaiting southbound transport to Juba.

Philippines: WFP welcomes support from Germany and Spain for conflict-affected people in Mindanao

Manila (31 July) -- The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed contributions from Germany and Spain of 500,000 Euros (estimated 56.7 million pesos) each to jumpstart WFP operations to support conflict-affected people in Central Mindanao.

As more internally displaced people return to their homes or resettle in other communities following the ceasefire in mid-2009 and peace talks continue, WFP recently shifted its focus from emergency relief activities to programmes designed to support the early recovery of returnee communities.

Pakistan: Commission provides €30 million to address humanitarian needs

The European Commission has adopted a €30 humanitarian aid decision to assist the most vulnerable people in Pakistan in urgent need of help. CWS response in Pakistan during deadly monsoon season includes food distribution

ISLAMABAD, July 31 - For millions of Pakistanis, floods during monsoon season are nothing new. But the scale and magnitude of this year's floods are far greater, resulting in tragic and deadly results, reports Pakistan-based staff of global humanitarian organization Church World Service.

At least 800 persons have died in floods during the last week; provincial government officials are asking for international assistance as the scale of this disaster appears to be beyond the capacity of the government of Pakistan to respond alone.

ABSTRACT

The ten ASARECA member countries (Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda) have adopted, or are planning to adopt, a range of climate change adaptation strategies in agriculture.

Of the 26 strategies mentioned, only two are common to all 10 countries, while five more are common to five or more. The strategies common to all member countries include the development and promotion of drought-tolerant and early-maturing crop species and exploitation
