Portugal provides assistance for displaced persons in Afghanistan

Lisbon, Portugal 31st October, 2001 - As winter approaches and the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan deepens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal today announced a joint collaboration between the Portuguese Institute of Co-operation (ICP), the Aga Khan Foundation (Portugal) and Focus Humanitarian Assistance Europe Foundation (FOCUS) to provide urgently needed food assistance to displaced populations in Afghanistan. Under an Agreement signed here today, the ICP will contribute 700,000 Euros for the purchase of wheat to be distributed amongst 70,000

$5 Million Urgently Needed to Provide Food and Shelter for Thousands of Displaced Families
Overview

With winter approaching, thousands of Afghan children face severe hunger and hardship as they flee with their families from Taliban-controlled areas of the country and arrive in the rugged mountains of northeastern Afghanistan. To reach 50,000 children most at risk, Mercy Corps is seeking $5 million to provide emergency shelter, food, water and sanitation, and heating and household supplies.

FEWS Zambia Food Security Report mid-Sep to mid-Oct 2001

Summary

Zambia is expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall overall during the 2001/2002 production season. The Department of Meteorology forecast that for the first part of the season, the southwestern part of Zambia would likely experience normal to below-normal rainfall, while the rest of the country will likely see normal to above-normal rainfall. For the second part of the season, forecasters project normal rainfall in the southern half of the country, while the northern half is likely to receive normal to above normal rainfall.

FEWS Malawi Food Security Report mid-Sep to mid-Oct 2001

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Malawi will experience normal rainfall this season (October-March), according to the Malawi Meteorological Department.

Distribution of free farm inputs under the Targeted Input Programme (TIP) has begun in the Southern Region. About 1 million smallholder households across the country are expected to benefit from this aid.

Official maize stocks remain low at only 2,684 MT, inadequate to meet the current demand for maize. Fortunately, the local markets are functioning and an increasing number of households depend on these markets as a source of maize.

As Afghan refugee crisis grows, MCC increases aid


AKRON, Pa. -- Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is calling for winter blankets and handmade comforters in response to the increasing number of Afghans who have fled their homes due to drought, war and recent threats of a U.S. military strike.
MCC will also contribute $158,000 Cdn./$100,000 U.S. for relief supplies. The items will be purchased in Pakistan and distributed by Medair, a European church-based relief agency.

Afghan refugee crisis appeal donations increase dramatically

Donations to Oxfam Community Aid Abroad's Afghan Refugee Crisis Appeal have dramatically increased, with the Australian public contributing $19,000 today (Monday 1 October) alone, on the 1800 034 034 appeal hotline.
"Although this is just the initial stage of the appeal, we thank the public for their generous response. It is clear that Australians are recognising the devastating conditions that millions of Afghan refugees are facing, and are beginning to respond," Oxfam Community Aid Abroad's Executive Director, Jeremy Hobbs said.
