School for Syrian refugees opens in Jordan camp

AMMAN, Nov 25, 2012 (AFP) - Jordan on Sunday opened a Bahrain-funded school in the Zaatari refugee camp near the Syrian border that can take up to 4,000 students, a Jordanian official said.

Jordan's education ministry and the UN children's fund UNICEF jointly run the school, in which 3,400 Syrian refugees are currently enrolled and taught by Jordanian and Syrian teachers.

A $2-million (1.5-million euro) grant from Bahrain funded the project.

Secretary General of Bahrain Royal Charity Organisation inaugurates new UNRWA health centre and library in Gaza

On 10 April 2012, two new premises of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the al-Bahrain Health Centre and the al-Bahrain Public Library, generously funded by the Bahrain Royal Charity Organization (RCO), were opened by HE Dr Mustafa Al Sayed, RCO Secretary-General. The inauguration ceremony was held at the al-Bahrain Health Centre in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip.

Bahrain donates USD 50,000 to UNRWA for education, health, and relief

The Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain has contributed USD 50,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The contribution will help UNRWA to deliver critical health, education, and humanitarian programmes for five million Palestine refugees in the region, through 700 schools, 137 primary health centres, and cash and food support for nearly 290,000 of the poorest refugees.

Bahrain contributes to UNRWA education in Gaza

UNRWA and the Bahrain Royal Charity Organization (RCO) have signed an agreement for the construction of eight new classrooms at the Fakhari Elementary School in Gaza. The classrooms will be funded by the Bahrain Parliament working through the RCO. UNRWA and the RCO also relaunched a project to construct a complete new school in Gaza, following a pledge originally made in the aftermath of Israel’s attack on Gaza in 2008-2009.

The 2011 Regional Response Plan for Iraqi Refugees builds on the 2010 process, and aims to provide a strategic framework for responding to the immediate needs of Iraqi refugees in twelve countries: Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. It represents the efforts made by all agencies to agree about common objectives, enhance coordination and ensure complementarity in responding to the needs of Iraqi refugees in the region.
