Outcome Document Affirms Poverty Eradication
As Greatest Challenge, Recommends Strengthening of Institutional Framework

RIO DE JANEIRO, 22 June — High-level officials of nearly every Member State meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, renewed their commitments to ensuring an “economically, socially and environmentally sustainable future for our planet and for present and future generations”, as the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development — Rio+20 — closed this afternoon.

Executive Summary

Several years after a massive influx of Iraqi refugees prompted the humanitarian community to build its first comprehensive and coordinated protection and assistance response, Iraqi refugees continue to constitute one of the largest urban refugee populations in the world.

The Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain has contributed USD 50,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The contribution will help UNRWA to deliver critical health, education, and humanitarian programmes for five million Palestine refugees in the region, through 700 schools, 137 primary health centres, and cash and food support for nearly 290,000 of the poorest refugees.

The 2011 Regional Response Plan for Iraqi Refugees builds on the 2010 process, and aims to provide a strategic framework for responding to the immediate needs of Iraqi refugees in twelve countries: Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. It represents the efforts made by all agencies to agree about common objectives, enhance coordination and ensure complementarity in responding to the needs of Iraqi refugees in the region.
