It takes a village to educate a girl

NIAMEY , May 20 2013 (IPS) - A decade ago, less than a third of school-aged girls in Niger were in class. Today, though significant cultural and religious opposition remains, nearly two-thirds of girls are enrolled in school.

“Back in 2003, we had only 15 girls at my school, out of 150 students. Now, we have 103 girls out of a total of 175 students,” said Ibrahim Sani, who has taught for 17 years in the town of Agadez, in the northern part of this West African country.

Dakar, 16 mai (HCR) – Abdoulaye Ndongo, âgé de 37 ans, est arrivé au Sénégal en 1989. Il avait 13 ans. Il se rappelle encore ce jour d'été, où il a été déporté de Mauritanie pour le Sénégal avec seulement les vêtements qu'il portait ce jour-là. Toutefois, Ndongo a eu la chance de traverser le fleuve Sénégal sans être séparé de ses parents, ce qui n'a pas été le cas pour beaucoup d'autres enfants réfugiés.

WASH

Since the beginning of the year 71,428 persons have received permanent access to an improved potable water source and 454,567 people received temporary access to potable chlorinated water. Roughly 15 per cent of the 1,222 Health centers throughout the country have a presence of WASH actors providing support for the WASH minimum package. In anticipation of the risk of cholera epidemic associated to the approaching rainy season, WASH partners have been identified in all areas (District Sanitaires) for which the risk has been identified as ‘extreme’, ‘elevated’ or ‘medium’.

The Caritas Annual Report shows our work in 2012 through five strategic priorities identified during the year: addressing poverty at home and abroad, responding to emergencies, upholding the dignity and rights of indigenous peoples, promoting environmental justice, and connecting effectively with our Catholic community.

Public donations topped $3 million last year, including a record Lent total of more than $900,000. We are grateful for the government’s New Zealand Aid Programme which contributed almost $1 million towards Caritas development and relief programmes.

Highlights.

  • Food insecurity remains a major concern in the northern regions (Gao, Timbuktu and Kidal), where at least one household in five faces severe food shortages.

  • Cholera outbreaks often occur during the rainy season, and could be worse this year without sufficient investment in prevention.

  • Internal population movements continue from north to south and vice versa. Displacements from north to south represent 62% of the total of 37,900 people censed in both direction between 12 January and 31 March.
