Afghanistan can be a dangerous place – even for Afghan national staff. Wahidullah Amani was nervous when he visited schools in a particularly insecure part of the country, but he was inspired by the courage of the schoolgirls he met.

SCA completed 12 projects in Samangan

Swedish Committee for Afghanistan completed twelve projects in Samangan province, which will benefit nearly 1400 families and 400 girls by getting access to graveled roads, school building and safe drinking water.

Construction of these projects which includes a girl’s school building along with 300 meter surrounding wall, 17 Kilometer long eight graveled roads and two water chambers were carried by the Northern Rural Project of SCA.

Students moved in to new school

It started as one small community based class, today the students enter a proper school buildning every morning. Kemyan school in Warsaj, Takhar is one of the lates schools bulit by SCA.

A brand new school buildning with six classrooms rises where most of the students previously got their education out in the open air.

”The building have many positive effects on the education, they work better in the classrooms and it is much easier for them to hear the teacher”, says Agha Mohammad Ashori, headmaster at the school.

UNAMA facilitates transfer of detained juveniles to new centre in Afghanistan's south-east

13 June 2013 – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) recently facilitated the transfer of close to a dozen youths arrested for various crimes, including for their association with anti-government forces, to a new juvenile centre in the south-eastern city of Gardez.

UNAMA’s Rule of Law Unit facilitated the transfer to the new, better-equipped Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre (JRC) from an old centre where the juveniles were previously lodged.

Conflict-induced Internal Displacement - Monthly Update, May 2013

Highlights

  • IDPs overall: As at 31 May, 570,705 persons (89,006 families) are internally displaced due to conflict in Afghanistan.

  • May 2013*: 34,769 individuals (5,150 families) have been recorded as newly displaced due to conflict of whom 31,797 individuals (91%) were displaced in May, while 1,737 individuals (5%) were displaced in April, 398 individuals (1%) in March and 30 individuals in January 2013. The remaining 807 individuals (2%) were displaced in November 2012.

The Ongoing Battle for the Schools: Uprisings, Negotiations and Taleban Tactics

In a follow-up to a December 2011 report, AAN revisits the ongoing negotiations between the Afghan Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Taleban. The earlier report, ‘The Battle for Schools: The Taleban and State Education’, focused on the changing Taleban attitudes towards Afghanistan’s state schools, allowing for the opening of schools in some of the areas under their control, and the negotiations with the MoE.

Refugees’ Township Middle School Building Opens

The new building of middle school of refugees’ township of Qarghayee district of Laghman province was inaugurated by the Governor and head of education department of the province in presence of government department officials and tribal influential.

The school building is built in reinforced concrete form at total expenditure of USD178,000 with the financial assistance of UNHCR in 8 months time. It has 8 classrooms, 4 administrative rooms, 6 toilets, a potable well, and it is provided with 160 tables and chairs as well as surrounding wall.

Funding shortfalls undermine fragile gains made in Afghanistan and affect preparations for upcoming monsoon season in Pakistan

(New York, 5 June 2013): OCHA Operations Director John Ging highlighted the serious consequences of humanitarian funding shortfalls following his weeklong mission to Afghanistan and Pakistan with the Emergency Directors of six UN agencies.

“We are very concerned that donor funding for humanitarian operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan is falling short at a critical moment of positive transition in the region,” said Mr. Ging, who briefed the media at UN headquarters today.

Afghanistan programme plan 2013

  1. Introduction

The security and political situation remains volatile in Afghanistan, including in Concern’s programme areas of Takhar and Badakshan Provinces. Despite the unpredictability of the situation, progress is being made on programme development, emergency preparedness and advocacy. The sequential withdrawal of international military forces, initiated in 2011, will intensify in 2013, culminating by mid-year. The impact of transition on access to programmes and on programme implementation will be monitored and modified accordingly.

2.9 million Patients treated by the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan in 2012

The future of Afghanistan is difficult to assess but there is precautious optimism.

When 2012 is summarized in the annual report of the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, we can conclude that development cooperation efforts make a significant difference for a very vulnerable population. Among other activities, The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan provided medical care to more than 2.9 million patients in four provinces.

Pakistan: Humanitarian Dashboard Floods 2012 (as of 30 May 2013)

SITUATION OVERVIEW

An estimated 1.5 million people in southern Pakistan are still highly vulnerable and require humanitarian assistance as they try and recover from the impact of the 2012 monsoon floods, according to humanitarian partners. The flood-affected people need livelihoods, shelter, health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene support.

Three consecutive years of flooding have only compounded the existing vulnerability of people living in hazard prone areas who are extremely poor and underdevelopment of their locations.

UNHCR with the Association for Protection of Refugee Women and Children(HAMI)

The Association for Protection of Refugee Women and Children (HAMI), a local NGO, invited its partners on the 28th of May, 2013 to the ceremonies it had organized for the end of the current academic year and also in line with World Refugee Day 2013. Participating colleagues were from UNHCR, Danish Refugee Council (DRC), German and Norwegian embassies. The visit was to two of HAMI’s educational centres in Shourabad (South of Tehran) where around 700 Afghan girls and boys have been studying at the elementary level.

Afghan students to benefit from new IT centre in country’s north

28 May 2013 - Information technology (IT) students in northern Afghanistan will be able to build on their skills with a newly-opened IT centre at Balkh University’s Computer Science College, established with financial support from Germany.
