Humanitarian Action Plan for the Santa Cruz Earthquake and Tsunami Response 2013

This Humanitarian Action Plan (HAP) was developed by the Government of Solomon Islands and its humanitarian and development partners, following the earthquake and tsunami that struck Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province in the Solomon Islands on 6 February 2013. It has a 4 months’ timeframe and aims to facilitate coordination of the humanitarian response and early recovery by documenting the response plan and identifying gaps and requirements.

The plan was drafted by the Solomon Islands Government and humanitarian partners and was presented to donors on 7 March. SB$24 million of funding requirements remain unmet. A further SB$30.8 million has been identified for reconstruction activities. While emergency shelter and WASH needs are being met, the costly medium and longer term reconstruction of homes and rehabilitation of water systems will require additional funding.

Solomon Islands: Earthquake and Tsunami - Information Bulletin n° 3

Summary

On 6 February, there was an 8.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province in the Solomon Islands, followed by 90 strong aftershocks for 2 weeks. Tsunami waves (1 – 3.5 meters) were experienced in Santa Cruz, Temotu Province which flattened many traditional houses.

Solomon Islands: Earthquake and Tsunami - Information Bulletin n° 2

Summary

At approximately 12:12 pm on 6 February, an 8.0 magnitude undersea earthquake occurred 33km west-southwest of the Santa Cruz Islands and generated a tsunami in the Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake had a depth of 28.7 kilometres. Following the original earthquake and tsunami, there have been more than 130 aftershocks. At least nine of these aftershocks have been 6.0 magnitude of higher, with two above 7.0 magnitude.

CHF 74,976 (USD 70,602 or EUR 52,184) was allocated from the IFRC's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 22 March 2010 to support the Solomon Islands Red Cross Society (SIRCS) in conducting rapid assessments in the Tropical Cyclone Ului-affected areas and in delivering immediate assistance to 2,250 beneficiaries through distribution of non-food relief supplies. Solomon Islands: Red Cross assisting vulnerable communities following Ului

Red Cross is currently assisting vulnerable community members as part of its cyclone recovery work.

Local Red Cross volunteers began targeted outreach today to establish contact with residents in and around areas hit by Cyclone Ului.

Executive director in Queensland Greg Goebel says a particular focus for volunteers will be checking on isolated and elderly residents.

"We have a good sense of how people in the city centres have been affected," Mr Goebel said, "however we are yet to determine the full impact on residents in outlying communities."
