Australian Civilian Corps team begins recovery work after destruction of Cyclone Evan

A team of five AusAID officials from the Australian Civilian Corps (ACC) arrived in Samoa this week to help the country begin assessing its recovery needs, particularly for transport and water infrastructure which was damaged by Cyclone Evan last month.

  • Extensive damage is feared after Tropical Cyclone Evan passed right over the western coastline of Fiji, one of the most populated areas.

World Bank To Assist With Tsunami Reconstruction In Samoa

WASHINGTON, 2 November, 2010-The World Bank today approved financing totaling US$11.8 million to support the reconstruction of vital infrastructure in Samoa following the devastating tsunami that hit the country in September 2009.

The Post-Tsunami Reconstruction Project will support the relocation and rehabilitation of communities on the island of Upolu affected by the tsunami by providing new access roads and rebuilding damaged roads and sea walls.

Australia supports Samoa disaster team

Australia has given $0.7 million to Samoa to help set up a Volunteer Emergency Response Team (VERT) to respond to natural disasters like last year's tsunami.

On his first official visit to Samoa, Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs Richard Marles launched the initiative, which will assist in search and rescue, recovery, sea patrols, water-based medical evacuations and provide first aid support.

The Australian funding will provide specialised equipment, technical training and help with the establishment of the team.

SAMOA Post-Disaster Needs Assessment Following the Earthquake and Tsunami of 29th September 2009

At 6:48am on the 29 September 2009, a powerful 8.0 magnitude earthquake close to the main Samoan Island chain with its epicenter 190 km south of the Samoan capital of Apia. This was followed only 10 - 20 minutes later by two tsunami waves that impacted American Samoa, The Independent State of Samoa, and the small northern island of Niuatoputapu in the Kingdom of Tonga. The highest swell of the water was reportedly 11m and caused unprecedented fatalities, and serious damage, to the affected Pacific Island countries.

Focus moves to long term recovery and rebuilding in Samoa

While it took only minutes for the Pacific tsunami and earthquake to cause havoc to the south coast of Samoa, the rebuilding and reconstruction efforts will take years.

This week Glenn Rose, New Zealand Red Cross Humanitarian Programmes Manager, will meet with Samoa Red Cross Society leaders and Pacific Red Cross partners to formulate a coordinated response to the long term rebuilding and recovery programmes required in Samoa.

After such a devastating event Mr Rose says recovery efforts and programmes are going to take years not months.

Australian Navy delivers aid for Samoa recovery

The Royal Australian Navy's heavy landing ship HMAS Tobruk yesterday arrived in Apia, the capital of Samoa, to deliver humanitarian aid coordinated by AusAID as part of the ongoing support to Samoa and Tonga following the tsunami that devastated parts of both island nations on 30 September.
