EU-funded technology helps disaster workers save lives

Summary: 22 July 2010, Brussels - WORKPAD, an EU-funded ICT research project, has developed software applications that allow emergency teams responding to natural disasters to coordinate and communicate with each other quickly and efficiently, helping to save more lives. Coordination and communication is especially important when emergency teams from many different agencies, civil authorities and NGOs are on the ground at the same time. €1.85 million of EU funding helped the researchers to explore how dozens of databases from different organisations

Italy: Abruzzo emergency - More than 6 million euros donated

OVER 600,000 MEALS SERVED, 4522 VOLUNTEERS ON THE FIELD AND MANY MORE READY TO GO

An extraordinary demonstration of solidarity, both from Italy and abroad has permitted the Italian Red Cross to raise significant funds from voluntary donations. To date, more than 6 million Euros have been raised (6.017.152,21 is the exact sum). The funds raised by the ItRC will be used in Abruzzo to provide social and health care assistance and to cater to the needs of the population. Italian Red Cross runs two new camps

THE RED CROSS CAMPS ARE NOW 8 WITH A TOTAL OF 5000 BEDS - MORE THAN 4 MILLION EUROS RAISED

The Italian Red Cross has taken on as of today another two camps: Cagnano Amiterno and Acciano. The total number of beds managed by the It.R.C. is 5000. The mobile kitchen of Acciano will provide meals for the camps of Rocca Preturo, Beffi and Succiano. The other It.R.C. camps are in San Benedetto di Bagno, Assergi, San Gregorio, Collemaggio, Coppito and Centicolella.

Meanwhile, more than 4 million Euros have been raised by the Red Cross for the earthquake: 4.160.808,21 Euros

Italian Red Cross helps rebuild lives after earthquake

The Italian Red Cross (IRC) continues its emergency response to the earthquake which struck the province of Abruzzo in central Italy on 6 April. The IRC is now making plans for a longer-term support to help those affected by the quake which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, and left 298 people dead, around 1,000 injured and 28,000 homeless.

Italian Earthquake: Information Bulletin 2

The Situation:

After the strong earthquake on 6 April, the city of L'Aquila in central Italy area has been hit by many after-stocks. The strongest measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred on the 7 April. According to the latest figure from the public authority, at least 289 people have been killed and 1,000 injured. An estimated 28,000 people become homeless.

The immediate needs such as shelter, food, medical care, psychosocial support are currently all being met. The operation is now entering into a recovery and rehabilitation phase.

Italian Red Cross disaster response continues

Three days after a strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit central Italy on the morning of 9 April, the city of L'Aquilla and the surrounding villages continued to be rocked by aftershocks. No additional losses of life have been reported as most of the settlements stand deserted with most people either evacuated to other parts of Italy or living in tent camps set up in the region.

At 19:42 on Tuesday night another strike hit Abruzzo province in central Italy measuring 5.7 on Richter scale. The shock echoed in the Italian Red Cross Headquarters offices in Rome 120 km from L'Aquila, who were still busy coordinating the humanitarian operations in this late hour. The aftershocks that continued through the whole night increased the tension and added work for the 400 staff and volunteers of the Italian Red Cross (IRC) working in the disaster zone.

There are now 5 camp kitchens run by the Italian Red Cross in the areas hit by the earthquake in Abruzzo, providing a total of 22.000 meals a day. Italy earthquake appeal launched

The British Red Cross has launched an appeal to help people affected by the powerful earthquake that struck L'Aquila in central Italy yesterday.

According to the Italian Red Cross, at least 179 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 34 are missing. The numbers of dead and injured are expected to grow. The earthquake left around 17,000 people homeless, in a city with a population of 70,000.

With a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, the earthquake struck the city of L'Aquila in central Italy, 120 km northeast of Rome, in the early hours of 6 April.
