Unicef Chad Situation Report on the Emergency in Tissi (April – May 2013)

Highlights

Chad is currently facing simultaneous, acute emergencies which are stretching capacity and current funding levels. UNICEF and partners have responded well to the most recent refugee and returnee influxes but we remain vigilant given current political turmoil in neighboring countries as well as a high risk for epidemics.

Yemen: Education Cluster Activities Updated (as of 31 May 2013)

The goal of the Education Cluster is to enable a predictable, well coordinated response that addresses the education concerns of populations affected by humanitarian crises. The cluster promotes education in a humanitarian crisis by strengthening the capacity and preparedness of humanitarian personnel and government authorities to assess needs, identify priorities, and coordinate a response. The Education Cluster was established in 2007 as part of the cluster approach.

In order to match the needs and current context in Somalia, it was decided to enable a transfer of EUR 11 700 000 form the Food Aid Budget Line to the Humanitarian Aid Budget Line.

This change aims at better reflecting the funding allocation to various planned Actions, following a thorough selection of partners and related proposals for Somalia.

Supporting Greater Prosperity and Security for Palestinians

June 17, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today visited the West Bank to announce an immediate, $25-million contribution to aid Palestinians.

“Canada supports a better, brighter future for all Palestinians,” said Baird. “The quickest, most sure-fire way to realize the promise of increased prosperity and greater security is to stop negotiating about negotiations and return to the table without preconditions. That’s long been my position and that’s what we’re supporting here today.”

  • Revised SHARP amounts to $1.4 billion to assist 6.8 million people inside Syria; $1 billion in unmet requirements until end 2013.

  • At least 93,000 Syrians killed so far in the conflict, according to OHCHR.

  • UN humanitarian agencies call for urgent access to affected populations in Rural Damascus.
    Cross-line inter-agency convoys bring aid to 215,000 people in Dar’a and Ar-Rastan; more than 1.2 million reached since end of January.

République Centrafricaine (RCA) Rapport de situation No. 20 (au 14 juin 2013)

Points saillants

  • Les résultats de l’évaluation du Mécanisme Rapide de Réponse (MRR) menée par ACTED du 18 au 30 mai 2013 dans les Préfectures de la Kemo, Ouaka, Basse Kotto et Mbomou, ont révélé des besoins humanitaires dans les secteurs suivants: santé, eau et l’assainissement (WASH), la protection, l'éducation et la sécurité alimentaire.

  • 15.902 personnes ont reçu l’assistance en WASH.

  • 141 enfants, dont 15 filles ont été libérés suite à des discussions en cours entre les Nations Unis et le gouvernement de transition de la RCA.

AWD Causes Increase in Caseload and Deaths

Admissions increased at the beginning of May due to an increase in the number of cases of Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) in the city.

The OTPs saw 20 deaths this month, which is the highest number of deaths so far this year, and the highest death rate of total OTP discharges since September 2011 (although still relatively low at 1.6%).

Syria Crisis Bi-Weekly Humanitarian Situation Report - Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey, 1 - 12 June 2013

Highlights

The violence inside Syria continues to escalate with UNOHCHR reporting that the number of deaths due to the conflict has now reached over 93,000 since March 2011. Of these, 6,561 are children, of whom 1,729 are under the age of 10. During the reporting period, the UN launched a revised appeal for US$4.4bn for its response to the crisis. UNICEF requires some $470 million to the end of December to maintain its lifesaving support to the children of Syria.

UNICEF Central African Republic Situation Report - Reporting Period 21 May - 13 June 2013

Headlines

  • 122,869 children were vaccinated against measles following a successful measles campaign carried out in Bangui from 22-26 May, reaching 99% of the target population of 125,000 according to preliminary data. In addition, of the target population, 112,370 children received Albendazole for deworming and 120,313 children were administered Vitamin A.

  • Since 27 May 2013, 141 children, 15 of whom are girls, have been released from armed groups following on-going discussions between UNICEF and the CAR government.
