1.The Declaration of the Initiative at a Joint Horn of Africa and East Africa Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Nairobi, Kenya on 9 th September 2011 and the Summit Directive for IGAD to convene a ministerial progress review after 6 months of the Declaration of the Initiative;

2.The endorsement of the IGAD Regional Platform for Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability (Hereafter referred to as the “Platform”) by the IGAD Summit of Heads of State and Government of 25 November 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Awdal – Situation Analysis October 2012

Context

Awdal borders Ethiopia in the North West and South West, and Djibouti and the Gulf of Aden in the North. It consists of four districts: Baki, Boroma, Lughaye, and Zeylac. Despite physical access challenges posed by poor road conditions along its mountainous coastal terrains, Awdal is historically a peaceful region which remains accessible to humanitarian organizations.

"Aucune pénurie alimentaire ne tombe du ciel. Au contraire, elles mettent des mois à s'installer". Tel est le constat que dresse Sylvie Brunel*, géographe, économiste et spécialiste des questions de développement. Alors que 13 millions de personnes souffrent, selon les chiffres officiels, de la famine dans la Corne de l'Afrique, des milliers de vie auraient pu être épargnées d'après les acteurs de l'aide.

Horn of Africa Drought Fact Sheet #26, Fiscal Year (FY) 2012

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

  • U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled to Kenya on August 4 to discuss political, development, and humanitarian issues in the region with high-level Government of Kenya (GoK) officials. During the visit, Secretary Clinton announced plans to provide up to approximately $54 million in U.S. Government (USG) humanitarian assistance the Horn of Africa. The additional contribution of humanitarian aid will help meet emergency food and non-food needs among drought-affected populations in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.

Global Logistics Cluster Operations Weekly Update, 27th July – 2nd August 2012

Each week the Global Logistics Cluster Support Cell (GLCSC) provides an operational update on the activities of Logistics Clusters/Sectors in the field, together with the details of the latest publications on the Logistics Cluster website.
