IOM Helps Flood Victims in Mozambique

Following the floods which hit Mozambique at the end of January this year, approximately 5,000 families have decided to start constructing new homes to begin new lives in permanent relocation sites with IOM's help.

IOM recently started its first distribution of shelter toolkits, as well as 4,500 solar kits with cell phone chargers and lights to reduce security risks in the new relocation sites. The organization is also working closely with the provincial government to improve data management and coordination between partner aid agencies.

This Emergency Appeal now seeks CHF 856,325 in cash, kind, or services to support the Mozambique Red Cross (CVM) to assist 28,500 beneficiaries (5,700 families) for 7 months. The operation will be completed by the end of September, 2013. A Final Report will be made available by 31 December, 2013 (three months after the end of the operation.

Staff of UN food agencies in Mozambique receive Award of Excellence

FAO, IFAD and WFP work together to improve food security

14 February 2013, Rome – In acknowledgement of the importance of partnership in tackling global issues, the staff of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have today been recognized for their outstanding work together in Mozambique.

Over the past several years, the UN food agencies’ country teams have collaborated effectively to help improve the country’s food security situation.

Mozambique: Flooding - Office of the Resident Coordinator, Situation Report No. 3 (as of 4th February 2013)

Coordination activities have been reinforced by the Government with the set-up of a mobile emergency operations center in Xai-Xai, capital of the Gaza Province. Health and sanitation concerns are emerging in flood-affected districts where water levels are receding; proper clean-up and restoration of basic health services are a priority.

This Preliminary Emergency Appeal seeks CHF 662,337 in cash, kind, or services to support the Mozambique Red Cross Society (CVM) to assist 15,000 beneficiaries for 6 months, and will be completed by the 1 August, 2013. A Final Report will be made available by 1 November 2013 (three months after the end of the operation).

CHF 300,000 was allocated from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support this operation. Unearmarked funds to replenish DREF are encouraged.

Southern Africa: Floods Situation Report No. 4 (as of 01 February 2013)

Highlights

  • Tropical Cyclone Felleng, which is passing down the eastern coast of Madagascar, has caused much rainfall since 30 January, but fortunately less than initially feared. So far no reports of significant damage have been received, although the water levels in some areas require vigilant monitoring.

  • Mozambique is now responding to floods in the north, central and south of the country, which has temporarily displaced an estimated 169,000 people.
