Ban appoints Abdullah Al Matouq as Humanitarian Envoy for Kuwait

28 November 2012 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Abdullah Al Matouq of Kuwait to work closely with the United Nations humanitarian chief to build stronger partnerships in Kuwait and the Persian Gulf region.

As the Humanitarian Envoy for Kuwait, Mr. Al Matouq will “ensure stronger linkages” between the UN and decision-makers in Kuwait and the region with the overall objective of supporting multilateral humanitarian response efforts, according to the announcement of his appointment.

KUWAIT CITY, 20 September 2012 (IRIN) - When Khalid Al-Yahya set out to track how much money Gulf countries have given in aid, he knew it would not be easy.

"It is almost impossible for a lot of people to have access to this," the director of the Arab Public Management Research Initiative at the Dubai School of Government told IRIN.

Highlights

  • Funding shortfalls are undermining the ongoing humanitarian response in Pakistan, with aid agencies cutting critical life-saving assistance.

  • Needs in Syria increased to an estimated 2.5 million people and the number of refugees has doubled since July. Whilst humanitarian agencies have scaled up, these efforts are being undermined by funding shortfalls.

  • The government of Iran led the humanitarian response to two earthquakes that left 300 dead, 2600 njured and over 150,000 affected.

  • The Council from the Australian Embassy visited the Öncüpınar Container Site and the Islahiye Camp in Gaziantep on May 23, 2012. The Ambassador of Canada visited the Öncüpınar Container Site in Kilis and the Islahiye Camp in Gaziantep on May 24, 2012.

The humanitarian consequences of the recent civil unrest have exacerbated the situation across the region especially for the most vulnerable with minimal coping capacities.

Action plan for disaster risk reduction takes shape in the Arab region

CAIRO, 23 November 2011 – The League of Arab States (LAS) and UNISDR move one step closer to a plan of action on disaster risk reduction for the Arab region. The action plan is expected to be endorsed at the first-ever Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Arab region planned for 2012.

Holding a series of consultations with disaster risk reduction experts in the region, UNISDR and LAS are developing the ‘Programme of Action’ to implement the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction 2020.

KUWAIT CITY/DUBAI, 19 October 2011 (IRIN) - Among the aid agencies that poured into Somalia after famine was declared in July were organizations such as the Arab Federation of Doctors, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment of the United Arab Emirates, and the Deniz Feneri Association of Turkey.

They came with their own style.

Kuwaiti relief aid to Somlaia stands at 3,000 tons

JEDDAH, Aug 6 (KUNA) -- Director of Office for Coordination of humanitarian work of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Mogadishu, Ahmed Mohamed Adam, said on Saturday that the total humanitarian aid donated by the State of Kuwait for the benefit of drought-stricken people in Somalia is estimated at 3, 000 tons.

Adam said in a press statement distributed here today that 70 percent of the total assistance has been distributed through the cooperation of Islamic relief alliance, which consists of 15 humanitarian organizations currently operating in Somalia.
