  • According to the Ministry of National Education, in January 499,843 refugee children (252,735 girls, 247,108 boys) were enrolled in temporary education centres and public schools across the country.

  • Almost 1,400 refugees and migrants made the dangerous sea journey to Greece in January – the lowest numbers seen since the UN and Turkish authorities began reporting on the crisis in 2015.

I. FOOD SECURITY DASHBOARD (JANUARY – NOVEMBER 2016)

The Food Security Dashboard tracks and reports on food security situation and number of people reached with various food security interventions. During the period, Dashboard showed that 1,568,850 vulnerable persons were reached with different food security related activities or interventions.

Background

The Logistics Cluster has been active in Iraq since 2014 to support the humanitarian community in responding to the country’s growing needs. Logistics constraints, mainly caused by limited access, an unstable security situation and damaged/destroyed infrastructure in affected areas remain a leading cause triggering the need for Cluster intervention.

Food Assistance in Numbers

  • Over the three month peak of the crisis (January—March), WFP’s aims to reach more than 13 million people with food assistance in Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • In January, food assistance reached 10.6 million people in the seven countries.

Highlights:

  • The revised hotspot woredas list (December 2016) classified 34 additional hotspot woredas as compared with the last classification which took place in July 2016. Of the 192 hotspot woredas, 67 are found in the Somali region, 43 are in Oromia, nine are in SNNP and 23 are in Afar region.

  • UNICEF has procured 200,000 tubes of scabies treatment cream permethrin 5 per cent, and 200,000 more tubes are in the pipeline. A total of 750,000 tubes have been procured by UNICEF since early 2016.

Highlights

  • Humanitarian partners have mobilised to respond to humanitarian needs resulting from new military operations in western Mosul city launched by Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) on 19 February. The initial humanitarian impact of these advances during the first few days of the offensive was not high, as security forces moved through sparsely populated hinterland areas where most civilians had already fled and due to the Iraqi Security Force’s (ISF) continued adherence to the humanitarian concept of operations.
