ADB to extend $600 million urban services investment program to Azerbaijan

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will extend up to $600 million in loans to Azerbaijan for water and sanitation improvements in towns that have suffered from decades of neglect and underinvestment in infrastructure.

The Board of Directors today approved a multitranche financing facility that will release loans periodically to support the Government of Azerbaijan's Water Supply and Sanitation Investment Program. The Government has earmarked up to $200 million for the 8-year investment

Japan contributes to a NATO Trust Fund Project in Azerbaijan

On 17 April, Japan signed the official documents related to their recent contribution to a NATO/PfP Trust Fund in Azerbaijan.

This Trust Fund aims to complete the clearance of some 571 hectares of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) contaminated land located at the former military base at Saloglu and the nearby towns of Agstafa and Poylu.

Russia gives US$2 million of food to displaced in Azerbaijan

BAKU - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a US$2 million food donation from the Russian Government to support thousands of vulnerable internally displaced people (IDPs) in Azerbaijan. At the same time, WFP appealed to other donors for more contributions to cover the last few months of the US$15.9 million operation.  

The commodities - 217.5 metric tons of vegetable oil and 2,016 metric tons of wheat flour - were purchased in Russia and will help feed 75,000 of the most vulnerable IDPs for four

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The second conflict in Chechnya, which started in Autumn 1999 and followed a first devastating war (1994-1996), took a heavy human toll and left the Republic in ruins.

Seven years later, while the heavy military phase of the conflict is over and most displaced people have come back to Chechnya to rebuild their lives, there are still vast humanitarian needs. According to DG ECHO(1)'s Global Needs Assessment, Chechnya is ranked among the areas with greatest vulnerability, and according to DG ECHO's classification, Chechnya is a forgotten crisis.

More countries set to gain assistance - avian flu

More than 20 countries are expected to receive assistance this year under the World Bank's global program for avian flu.

The funding program, approved by the Bank's Board of Directors earlier this year, allows for up to US$500 million to help countries deal with avian flu in animals while at the same time, preparing for a possible human pandemic.

RCS offers aid in Azerbaijan, Iraq

The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has offered Dh 150,000 in support of the Gulf Autism Centre. Mohammed Habroush Al Rumaithi, Deputy Secretary General for Local Affairs, said 'the donation is part of the society's effort to support centres for people with special needs to enable them assume their important humanitarian mission properly.

The government of Saudi Arabia donate US$ 50 000 to support mine action in Azerbaijan

01 February 2006: official ceremony of contribution of 50,000 US$ to the Mine Action in Azerbaijan took place at ANAMA HQs. The Government of Saudi Arabia joined a list of Donors to eliminate threat by explosive remnants of war in war-torn areas.

United States sends more land mine dog teams to Azerbaijan

Canine mine-detection teams support heavy equipment used for mine removal

Washington - The United States is sending five more specially trained dogs to help rid Azerbaijan of persistent land mines, the State Department announced January 19.

The additional land mine dog teams will help support a heavy-duty machine that tills anti-personnel and anti-vehicle land mines from the soil, and a modern explosive ordnance disposal robot, both recently provided by the United States, the department said.

Azerbaijan donates $3m to World Food Program

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) thanked the Azeri government for its pledge to contribute $3 million to its three-year relief operation for internally displaced people in Azerbaijan, at a rate of $1m per year.

Some 2,100 tons of wheat flour, oil and sugar, amounting to $800,000 were distributed among 130,000 rural displaced households living in very poor conditions in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan became a donor to WFP for the first time this year.
