EU Offers Aid in Hungary's Toxic Flooding

European Union crisis response chief Kristalina Georgieva says massive toxic flooding in Hungary that killed nine people and injured more than 120 others has underscored the need for a stronger European disaster response.

The European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva announced in Budapest the European Union will provide machinery, vehicles and materials to help Hungary overcome its worst industrial accident on record.

Toxic waste disaster: Switzerland supports Hungary

An environmental expert from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) will be arriving in the Hungarian disaster area today. At the request of the Hungarian government he will support the authorities in their efforts to deal with the toxic waste disaster.

The Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development (SDC) has sent an SHA expert with practical experience in comparable situations to support the Hungarian authorities. He will arrive in the disaster area today with laboratory equipment.

Soros and His Open Society Foundations Give $1 Million to Victims of Toxic Spill in Hungary

Budapest-In response to the ecological disaster in Hungary, the Open Society Foundations today announced a grant of $1 million to support the victims of the toxic sludge spill in the western part of the country. The grant will be used for reconstruction efforts and to ensure similar catastrophes are avoided.

Norway to send 323 000 sandbags to flood-stricken Hungary

This week, Norway is to send 323 000 sandbags to flood-stricken Hungary. Heavy rains have caused extensive flooding in Central Europe in recent weeks.

Hungary has requested assistance from European countries in order to meet its immediate need for two million sandbags to strengthen its flood containment capacity. The Norwegian Armed Forces are providing 323 000 sandbags, financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Norway's contribution is a result of its participation in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Switzerland supports Hungary's fight against the serious threat of floods

Hungary is getting prepared to face a major risk of flooding in the north of the country. The Danube and the Tisza are threatening to overflow their banks towards the middle of next week. To cope with this threat, the Hungarian government has requested the aid of its European partners. Switzerland will deliver 500,000 bags of sand and dispatch to the site three experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit.

Minister Kohout approved humanitarian aid to Poland and Hungary

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Kohout approved granting humanitarian aid to Poland and Hungary on June 4, 2010. Humanitarian aid in an amount of 5 mil. CZK is applied for relief of current flood in the Central Europe.

Regarding demands of both countries 5 bulk pumps and 100 000 flood protection bags are provided to Poland and Hungary respectively. The humanitarian aid is distributed by the General Management of the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic and financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

Germany, Denmark Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Austria and Croatia offer 2.12Million sand bags to Hungary to cope with floods

As a response to the Hungarian activation of the EU Civil protection mechanism, Germany has offered yesterday this afternoon 1 270 010 sand bags to increase its flood containment capacity of the country. The Czech Republic has offered 100 000 additional sand bags, the same amount offered by the Netherlands and Croatia Austria has offered 250 000 and last but not least, Denmark also offered 300.000 additional bags. The combined offers of these five countries(2.12 Million bags) go beyond the to 2 million sand bags that Hungary requested on 25 May when

EU Solidarity Fund: Commission proposes € 15 million of aid for regions in Hungary hit by severe floods

Brussels, 1 December 2006 - The European Commission today proposed to grant aid from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) totalling € 15.06 million to help to deal with the consequences of the flood disaster that severely hit Hungary earlier this year. The money will be used to reimburse a part of the cost of emergency measures such as rescue services, the cleaning up of disaster stricken areas and the restoration of basic infrastructures to working condition.
