Embajadas de Brasil y España donan alimentos para habitantes del corredor seco

Un total de 456.5 toneladas métricas de arroz fueron donadas por embajadores de Brasil y España. La donación será distribuida a familias de cuatro departamentos del corredor seco. La entrega se realiza a través del programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA).

Elmer López, Ministro de Agricultura, Ganadería y Alimentación (MAGA), informó que la ayuda será para las familias más afectadas de los departamentos de Santa Rosa, Suchitepéquez, Huehuetenango y Chimaltenango, que hacen un total de 10,927 beneficiados.

P4P en Guatemala: de la agricultura de subsistencia a la comercialización

A finales del 2008 se inicia Compras para el Progreso (P4P, por sus siglas en inglés) en Guatemala con el apoyo de la Fundación Howard G. Buffett.

Gracias a esta iniciativa unos 14,800 pequeños agricultores –agrupados en 81 cooperativas—han vendido más de 8,000 toneladas de alimentos al PMA y al mercado local. En su cuarto aniversario, Sheryl Schneider, Coordinadora de P4P, repasa los logros del programa y los planes futuros.

Gobierno, cooperación japonesa y Banco Mundial inauguran proyecto por seguridad alimentaria en Corredor Seco

El gobierno de Guatemala, la cooperación japonesa y el Banco Mundial (BM) inauguraron el lunes un proyecto productivo para ayudar a mil pequeños productores en comunidades del Corredor Seco a adaptar sus prácticas agrícolas y mejorar su productividad.

El proyecto, financiado por una donación de 2.5 millones de dólares del Fondo Japonés de Desarrollo Social y administrado por el BM, “tiene el objetivo de fortalecer la capacidad de los campesinos de hacerle frente a la inseguridad alimentaria”.

This represents an area of 4.1 million square kilometres and with a population of 77 million.

World Bank and Moldova join forces to fight impacts of climate change on agriculture

A joint partnership between the World Bank, the Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry and the Ministry of Environment was launched in Moldova's capital in the late days of October. The new partnership aims to consolidate Government and Bank efforts to reduce the vulnerability of Moldova's farmers to climate change. The program will be managed by the World Bank and supported by about $350,000 in grants from the World Bank, the Bank-Netherlands Partnership, and the Trust Fund for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development.

- Extremely hot temperatures and below normal rainfall across southeast Europe from June to August 2007 led to numerous wildfires in nearly every country in the region. Although wildfires are annual occurrences, and the local ecosystems are fire-adapted, the 2007 season was among the worst on record, according to national firefighting authorities and government officials.

Moldova: Commission allocates €3 M of humanitarian assistance for victims of drought and plans further allocations

Following a severe drought in Moldova, especially districts in the South, the European Commission has allocated €3 million in humanitarian aid for the country's most vulnerable farmers and rural people as a short-term measure. USAID provides additional wildfire assistance to Greece

WASHINGTON, D.C - The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is announcing the contribution of $1.2 million in equipment and technical assistance to the Government of Greece (GOG) to help combat wildfires in the country. This announcement follows the provision of an initial $100,000 on August 28, which USAID directed to the Hellenic Red Cross for emergency fire fighting equipment and emergency relief commodities. This support is in response to the declaration on August 25 by the GOG that a national state of emergency existed in the country.

Greece fires: Contribution by the World Council of Hellenes Abroad from the region of former USSR countries

Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Theodore Kassimis received today, at the Foreign Ministry, the Region Coordinator of SAE former USSR countries, Mr. Ivan Savidis.
