DREF Operation Bulletin Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: Floods (MDRMK002)

CHF 176,424 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 1,216 families (4,864 beneficiaries) and replenish the National Society stocks for the already distributed items for 421 families. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Building resilience to disasters in western Balkans and Turkey

Geneva/Zagreb, Croatia, 30 August 2012 (UNISDR/WMO) – The United Nations, European Commission and national authorities have launched a new project in the Western Balkans and Turkey that will reduce disaster risks and increase resilience to climate change.

The project launch is planned for 30 August in Zagreb, Croatia and it is aimed at high-level participants from disaster management authorities and national meteorological and hydrological services.

Donation from Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

In response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Government of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) provided relief money of 100,000 euro (about 12 million yen).

From FYROM, letters of sympathy and condolences were sent from H.E. Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, President, H.E. Mr. Nikola Gruevski, Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Antonio Milososki, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ivica Georgievski, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group for Cooperation with the Diet of Japan, and many others.

Norway's involvement in the Western Balkans

Since 1991 Norway's total project assistance to the Western Balkans has reached more than NOK 10 bn. (approximately € 1,2 bn.). For 2009 the allocation is NOK 575 million. The assistance primarily targets key reform and development processes in the region, and increasingly focuses on democracy-building measures, long-term capacity- and institution-building and private sector development, supporting regional stability and Euro-Atlantic integration.

Message on countries of the South 2009 - 2012: Unified Swiss development cooperation strategy

With its Message on the Continuation of Technical Cooperation and Financial Aid for Developing Countries 2009 - 2012, the Federal Council presented a unified strategy for the Swiss Government's development cooperation as a whole.

By means of this Message, the Federal Council gears Swiss development cooperation to three priorities:

- reducing poverty;

- reducing security risks;

- co-shaping a form of globalization that promotes development.

Four-and-a-half billion Swiss francs have been allocated for this work for the period 2009-2012.

- Extremely hot temperatures and below normal rainfall across southeast Europe from June to August 2007 led to numerous wildfires in nearly every country in the region. Although wildfires are annual occurrences, and the local ecosystems are fire-adapted, the 2007 season was among the worst on record, according to national firefighting authorities and government officials.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $50,000 for the purchase of fire fighting equipment to assist the Government of Bulgaria in combating recent wildfires.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $100,000 to assist the Governments of Albania and Macedonia in combating recent wildfires.

New strategy for cooperation with Macedonia

The Government has approved a new cooperation strategy for development cooperation with Macedonia for the period 2006-2010.
Cooperation with Macedonia will be targeted at poverty reduction by supporting the process for the country's future membership of the EU. Support will be concentrated on the agricultural sector. Other areas to receive funds are human rights and social collaboration, and initiatives in the field of environment to contribute to sustainable development.
