Emergency Assistance to the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) for Drought Disaster

  1. On Friday, May 17, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency relief goods worth eight million yen (water and food) to the RMI, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the RMI Government following serious damage from the drought.

United States Provides Additional Assistance to Marshall Islands’ Drought Relief

For immediate release--May 16, 2013

The United States turned over two additional solar powered mobile reverse osmosis (RO) machines to the Government of the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) on May 16. The two units will be sent on May 17 to the atolls of Ailuk and Maloelap to help provide relief to communities suffering from severe drought.

Emergency food aid needed in crippling Marshalls drought

There's no relief in sight for the drought affected region of the northern Marshall Islands.

And as the rain holds off conditions will only get worse.

An estimated 5,000 people in the northern atolls are experiencing severe drought conditions with an additional 11,000 people affected by crop loss due tio the lack of rain.

Drinking water is being rationed and there's no water for bathing or other domestic purposes.

Drought relief in the Marshall Islands

Foreign Minister Bob Carr today announced Australia would provide $100,000 for the emergency supply of desalination units for the Marshall Islands, following continued severe droughts which have severely reduced agricultural capacity and risk endangering local lives.

"This is about saving lives and protecting the food supply across the Marshall Islands' northern atolls," Senator Carr said.

"It follows a specific request from the Marshall Islands Government.

As the world marks the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (13/10), IOM has announced the start of a major Asian initiative to assist vulnerable communities to prepare for and reduce the risk of natural disasters.

The organization has received USD17 million, mainly from the USA and Australia, which will be used primarily for community-based disaster risk reduction, but also to build capacity in governments and national partners.

Improving access to safe drinking water in the Marshall Islands

Australia is helping improve access to fresh, safe drinking water for every household on Ebeye, one of the major islands in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Richard Marles, said Australian-supplied water tanks were part of a continuing commitment to improve water and sanitation in the Marshall Islands.

'This year, Australia is supporting the provision of 220 water tanks on Ebeye, in addition to 150 water tanks supplied last year,' Mr Marles said.
