SECURITY HIGHLIGHTS
The security situation within Sierra Leone and along the borders with Liberia and Guinea has been generally stable with no serious clashes amongst factions. The disarmament process has now been completed in Kono District and is ongoing in Moyamba and Koinadugu where there have been slight delays in the process due to the limited capacity of the camps, primarily in Moyamba.

U.S., world community fighting food shortages in Central America

Washington -- The United States and the international community are continuing their joint effort to fight drought conditions and food shortages in Central America that have led to the worst crisis to hit the region since Hurricane Mitch in 1998, reports the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID indicated that nearly 610,000 people in Central America are experiencing food deficiencies due to crop losses, with Honduras and Nicaragua identified as the two hardest-hit countries.

Situation

1. Flash floods and the Nile river's seasonal rising waters have affected ten States, of which River Nile, Sennar, Kassala, and South Darfur States are the most adversely affected. Floods are now receding in certain areas (Khartoum) but the situation downstream to northern states will soon become preoccupying.

Humanitarian response to the population threatened by famine in Tajikistan: €2 million to enhance food security

The European Commission, through its Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson, has moved quickly to pledge humanitarian assistance for drought-struck Tajikistan. The country once again faces the spectre of crop failures leading to severe food shortages.

Northwest Medical Teams announced today that it will send $10,000 in cash and begin to collect financial help and other humanitarian aid for poor families in areas of Honduras on the verge of life-threatening famine.

CIDA funds the University of Calgary to help rebuild the education system in Kosovo

Ottawa - Maria Minna, Canada's Minister for International Cooperation, today announced that the Canadian partnership of the University of Calgary and Universalia Management Group Ltd. of Montreal will receive funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for an $8 million, three-year project to help rebuild the education system in Kosovo.
