Finland to provide assistance to flood-affected areas of Eastern and Northern Africa

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has granted EUR 700,000 of emergency assistance through the Finnish Red Cross to the areas of Eastern and Northern Africa affected by severe flooding. The emergency appeal launched by the UN amounts to EUR 60 million, in addition to which the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, IFRC, have launched an appeal totalling EUR 12 million.

The floods are a result of unusually heavy and persistent rain. In Eastern Africa, the worst-hit countries include Ethiopia, Sudan and Uganda. For instance, in Ethiopia the floods have impacted

WFP imports maize from Malawi for Zimbabwe

JOHANNESBURG - The United Nations has imported nearly 36 000 tonnes of maize from Malawi as part of emergency food aid for Zimbabwe.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced yesterday that it had bought 35 926 tonnes of white maize for Zimbabwe from Malawi, about 40 percent of the more than 88 000 tonnes of food it imported from the southern African country to feed five countries.

OPT: Federal Foreign Office supports aid measures for Gaza Strip inhabitants to the tune of 1 million euro

The Federal Foreign Office will provide 1 million euro for emergency aid measures aimed at helping the people in the Gaza Strip. This will be announced today (1 November) by Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is in Ramallah as part of his visit to the Middle East.

The funds will be made available to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to provide food for needy refugee families in the Gaza Strip, where the humanitarian situation has increasingly worsened over the past few months.

Emergency Assistance to the Dominican Republic for the Tropical Storm Disaster

1. On November 1 (Thu), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (tents, sleeping pads, blankets, water purifiers and plastic sheets), equivalent to about 13 million yen, to the Government of the Dominican Republic, which has sustained damage caused by the tropical storm Noel.

2. According to an announcement of the Government of the Dominican Republic (as of October 31), 56 people were dead, more than 58,000 affected, 14,582 houses totally or partially destroyed, and such infrastructure as roads and bridges and agricultural produce damaged.

Saudi Arabia finances new UN-HABITAT Palestinian training centre

Geneva. The Saudi Arabian government this week pledged US$1.59 million for the establishment of a new technical and vocational training centre for underprivileged Palestinian women living in the occupied West Bank.

In accordance with a Royal Decree by King Abdulla Bin Abel Aziz Al Saud, the funds were committed by the Saudi Committee for the Relief of the Palestinian People. The Regional Humanitarian Funding Update provides a quarterly overview of funding levels and trends in the 14 countries of the Central and East Africa region (CEA(1)) based on data reported to the Financial Tracking System (FTS(2)). Assistance for Palestinian refugees

The Federal Foreign Office is providing assistance for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, many of whom are living under very difficult circumstances in refugee camps there.Assistance on the ground is provided by dedicated NGOs.World Vision Deutschland, for example, is able to supply hygiene items for more than 2000 refugee children in Beddawi camp thanks to funding from the Federal Foreign Office to the tune of 135,000 euro.

Sudan: Morocco grants USD 500,000 to protect Darfour children from epidemics

Rabat, Oct. 31 - Morocco is due to grant USD 500,000 to Sudan in support of the health care action in the region of Darfour, especially in terms of protecting children from virulent epidemics.

The announcement was made by Moroccan State Secretary at the Foreign Ministry, Ahmed Lakhrif during the Arab congress taking place in Khartoum, according to a statement by the Moroccan embassy in the Sudanese capital.

The heads of the Arab delegations are due to visit Darfour on Wednesday to enquire about the humanitarian situation

SKorean unionists help feed hungry NKorea

SEOUL, Oct 31, 2007 (AFP) - Union leaders from South Korea's biggest carmaker have left for North Korea to attend the inauguration of a food aid project funded partly by donations from unionists, officials said Wednesday.

Hyundai Motor's 44,000-strong union gave 500 million won (553,800 dollars), collected from individual workers, to help a South Korean humanitarian group build a corn noodle factory in the impoverished North.

It was the first time that a South Korean company union had donated such aid to the North, which suffers persistent food shortages.

31/10/2007 Beirut - The American University of Beirut and UN-HABITAT held a special meeting earlier this month for municipal, governmental and non-governmental groups to hone their strategy for post-war reconstruction in the south of the country.

The meeting was called to address all aspects of a new two-year project known as the "Good Governance for Enhanced Post-War Reconstruction," which is implemented by UN-HABITAT in partnership with the union of municipalities of Tyre, Bint Jbeil and Jabal Aamel, and in cooperation with Beit bil Jnub, the University, and others.

República Dominicana: BID desembolsará 200 mil dólares para ayuda humanitaria

El representante del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), Moisés Pineda, anunció este miércoles que el organismo internacional desembolsará en una primera fase 200 mil dólares para que el Gobierno dominicano pueda atender asuntos humanitarios, de rescate y que requieran inmediatez, debido a los daños causados por la tormenta Noel.

According to UNHCR (1) , the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) remains at approximately 2.25 million. While the number of IDPs increases in some areas, branches of the Ministry of Displacement and Migration (MoDM) are reporting the return of IDPs in several governorates such as Baghdad, Babylon and Najaf - some 3,200 families are reported to have returned to Baghdad by the MoDM.

The worst fighting this year since April erupted in Mogadishu during the last weekend of October. The fighting, combined with house-to-house searches, large-scale detentions and statements by officials ordering inhabitants to leave certain districts, forced 90,000 (1) people to flee Mogadishu or move within the city during a three-day period. The flooding that affected all ten states of Southern Sudan has begun to subside in most places. The humanitarian focus, however, remains in response to immediate humanitarian needs as previously cut-off populations increasingly become accessible for provision of assistance. Agencies continue to respond to meet immediate needs in areas such as health, clean water, food and non-food items. Humanitarian partners and United Nations agencies are also looking to the medium term impacts of the flooding.
