Iran: Jordanian field hospital provides round-the-clock medical service in Bam

BAM, Iran, January 1 (Petra) - Jordan's field hospital in the quake-stricken Iranian town of Bam on Wednesday began providing round-the-clock medical service to earthquake victims, two days after the medical team's arrival on the scene.

Hospital Director Mohammad Tarawneh said the fully-equipped hospital, manned by specialists and general practitioners as well as nurses, is conducting all kinds of surgeries, and providing orthopaedic and paediatric services.

The hospital is equipped with X-ray units, a laboratory, blood bank and pharmacy, as well as an intensive care unit,

    USAID announces contribution of 30,000 metric tons of sorghum to the WFP for Zimbabwe

    WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced a donation of an additional 30,000 metric tons (MT) of food, valued at $12 million, to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The food contribution will consist of sorghum grain and is intended for distribution within Zimbabwe.

    The U.S. government is the largest single donor of food aid to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe. With this contribution, U.S. government food donations to the WFP for Zimbabwe since November 2001 total more than 298,000 MT, valued at approximately

    Korea offers Iran aid to help quake victims

    The Korean government has pledged an additional US$1 million in disaster relief aid to Iran to help the country cope with the earthquake devastation.

    The government last week announced that it would send $200,000 in cash, and a 119 emergency task team to Iran.

    In addition, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said that it would dispatch Thursday a 19-strong medical team.

    The decision on providing more aid came at Tuesday's cabinet meeting, in response to which the Iranian government has expressed its gratitude, said Cho Young-dong, minister of the government information agency.

    U.S. expedites assistance to Iran earthquake victims

    At the direction of President George W. Bush, the United States has initiated a number of extraordinary steps to facilitate the engagement of U.S. relief organizations to assist the victims of last week's earthquake in Iran.

    After consultation with Congress, Secretary of State Powell determined that, due to the extraordinary humanitarian needs created by this earthquake, it is in the national interest of the United States to issue additional licenses that will enable the Department of State and USAID as well as U.S. NGOs to export to Iran certain items

    I. SITUATION UPDATE
    In the north, heavy weapons withdrawal continues with more than 400 weapons collected so far. UN operations in Sangcharak district in Saripul province remain suspended. In the northeast, due to heavy snow and ice on the runway, airports in Kunduz and Fayz Abad were closed.

    In the east, UN missions to Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman and Nuristan provinces remained suspended.

    To continue to build the capacities of teachers, and in specific efforts to promote girls' education, the Community Girls Special Project (CGSP) was given a boost when an education expert from the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) conducted a teacher training in Nyal. 15 participants attended this training, which is aimed at ensuring quality education for girls.

    Spokesperson's remarks on China's added emergency assistance to Iran

    There has been greater life and property loss caused by strong earthquake in Kerman Province, Iran. Considering the seriousness of the disaster and to better help the people in Iran to be relieved from disaster, the Chinese Government decided to offer another batch of assistance material worth of 10 million RMB yuan on the basis of the first batch worth of 5 million RMB. The second batch will be on its way very shortly.

    BACKGROUND

    According to the U.S. Geological Survey, on December 26, 2003 at 05:27 am local time, an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck Kerman Province in southeastern Iran. The epicenter of the earthquake, with a depth of 10 km, was near the city of Bam, 180 km southeast of the provincial capital of Kerman and 975 km southeast of Tehran.

    Philippines: U.S. assisting flood and landslide victims in Leyte and Mindanao

    30 December 2003. The U.S. Government, acting through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), today donated an additional 7,763,000 Pesos to the Philippine National Red Cross to further assist the victims of flashfloods and landslides in Southern Leyte and the Caraga Region of Mindanao. These funds will be used to provide 96 core shelter units, four deep water wells for emergency water supply, and various support costs targeted to Southern Leyte, the most hard hit area. Some 28,000 families in Southern Leyte are affected by the disaster according to the Red Cross.

    Humanitarian aid to the population of Iran

    On the instructions of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Emergency Situations Ministry is beginning to deliver humanitarian aid to the Iranian population that has suffered as a result of the heavy earthquake there.

    An Il-76 plane will fly from the Ramenskoye airfield on December 31. It will deliver to the Iranian province of Kerman warm clothes, blankets, tents, stoves, water purification plants and electricity generators.

    As Yuri Brazhnikov, Deputy Minister, has announced, the next flight of a ministry plane with humanitarian cargo is being planned early next month.
