Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, while receiving the donation from the five donors, assured them the money will be very useful in the relief efforts especially to those affected from floods in the Western division.

“I am planning to make another tour of the Western division next week to check on the relief efforts,” Mr Bainimarama said.

This bulletin is being issued for information only and reflects the current situation and details available at this time. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is not seeking funding or other assistance from donors for this operation. The Fiji Red Cross will, however, accept direct assistance to provide support to the affected population.

He said this donation will be deposited immediately to the Prime Ministers Flood Relief Trust account.

The widespread rain and subsequent flooding in Fiji has left at least 10 ten dead, and hundreds more sheltering in evacuation centres.

But with the wet weather conditions showing no signs of letting up, some local Fiji businesses have been out of work for weeks.

The Fiji Sawmillers Association says over 2000 local sawmill workers around the country have been affected by the rain.

Six hundred sawmillers in Vanua Levu have been without jobs for the past three weeks as logging remains halted.

The National Disaster Management Office has extended the state of natural disaster in the Western Division for a further 10 days with effect from February 9, to allow full damage assessments to be completed.

According to the National Disaster Office, the extension will give time for cleaning up of areas affected by the floods before those evacuated return home.
