Mozambique: Storms and Floods - Jan 2012 — 53 found

This Emergency Appeal seeks CHF 2,728,741 in cash, kind, or services to support the Mozambique Red Cross Society (CVM) to assist 14,000 households (70,000 beneficiaries) for 12 months, and will be completed by the end of February, 2013. A Final Report will be made available by May 2013 (three months after the end of the operation).

In addition, the IFRC is soliciting CHF 62,373 to cover the cost of Shelter Cluster coordination; funds will be allocated to this component when partners expressly indicate their interest.

ActionAid is providing emergency relief to thousands of people affected by the recent heavy flooding in Mozambique and Malawi, where torrential rains have destroyed essential infrastructure and left thousands of people homeless.

Fierce storms in southern Mozambique and Malawi have killed more than 40 people and forced more than 18,000 people to flee their homes.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • In total, an estimated US$17 million are required to provide humanitarian assistance to 33,485 households affected by the combined effects of storms and cyclone in the provinces of Zambezia, Gaza, Maputo, Inhambane and Nampula;

  • According to the Ministry of Agriculture, an estimated 123,000 ha of planted area was affected, of which 6,000 ha have been lost;

MAPUTO, Feb 16, 2012 (IPS) - Over 100,000 people in Mozambique are still recovering from losing their homes and crops, and from being cut off from schools and shops after a tropical storm and cyclone hit the southern African country in January. But the worst may not be over as another dangerous cyclone is expected to make landfall Friday evening as emergency stocks run low.

Plus de 67 000 personnes ont été touchées lorsque le cyclone Funso s'est abattu sur la province mi-janvier. Quelque 4 000 familles ont vu leurs maisons complétement détruites et 8 000 autres sérieusement endommagées.

Tapiwa Gomo, Quelimane, Mozambique

Following the cyclone and floods that ravaged Quelimane town and its outskirts, health officials have raised concern over the possibilities of cholera, malaria and diarrhoeal outbreak.

Tropical Cyclone Funso swept across the coastal areas of Zambezia province leaving trail of destruction to property and crops. Thousands of people were left homeless among them elderly, child-headed families and the sick.

ANTANANRIVO, 15 February 2012 (IRIN) - At least 10 people have died after Cyclone Giovanna struck Madagascar but details of its impact on the regions which bore the brunt of the category-four tropical storm remain sketchy, as communications and electricity supplies have been cut.

The cyclone made landfall in the early hours of 14 February south of the port town of Toamasina and then carved a path through heavily populated areas towards the capital, Antananarivo, reportedly uprooting trees, damaging infrastructure, causing landslides and flooding as it moved inland.

Despite an excellent harvest of rice in the fields, Joana Latila and her husband, who support four grandchildren, found themselves without immediate access to food.

Their fields became inundated with rain in late January and Joana fears that her grandchildren will suffer from hunger in coming months.

“We don’t really know how badly the rice has been affected", she says. "My husband thinks that if the water leaves the field within a week the rice will survive but I am not so sure”.

Summary: Storms carrying heavy rain have hit Malawi since late December 2011, which has led to flash floods and destruction of infrastructure including houses, school blocks and others. Among the districts affected so far are Thyolo, Phalombe, Chikwawa and Nsanje in the southern region, Dedza and Salima in the central region and Nkhata Bay, Rumphi and Karonga in northern region of Malawi.

IOM Mozambique has taken delivery of emergency shelter materials donated by the US government for over 5,000 cyclone-affected families in Zambézia Province.

Over 67,000 people were affected when tropical cyclone Funso hit the province in mid-January. Some 4,000 families saw their homes completely destroyed and another 8,000 homes were left badly damaged.

The US donation, which arrived in Maputo on Friday on a US-chartered 747, included enough plastic sheeting to provide shelter for 5,000 families, as well as roofing for 200 classrooms and health clinics.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has dispatched emergency relief supplies to Mozambique following the cyclone and floods which have ravaged southern and central parts of the country in recent days.

Emergency goods were dispatched from JICA’s South Africa warehouse, arriving at Maputo International Airport on 6 February. A handover ceremony was held at 12:15 (local time) on that day at the the National Disasters Management Institute (INGC) in the airport.

NSANJE, Malawi, Feb 9, 2012 (IPS) - They survived floods and witnessed the horrific scenes of their houses, livestock, household items and gardens being swept away at the end of January. Now, the people of the Nsanje and Chikhwawa districts on Malawi’s southern border with Mozambique are facing another menace; a cholera outbreak, which has already killed one child and infected up to 103 people.

MAPUTO, February 9, 2012 (AFP) - Rescue workers in Mozambique have found the bodies of three more people killed in flooding after twin tropical storms ravaged the Indian Ocean coast in January, bringing the death toll to 40, an official said Thursday.

"The death toll from cyclones Dando and Funso that struck the country in January has risen from 37 last week to 40 this week, based on the government's weekly monitoring data," government spokesman Alberto Nkutumula told AFP.

The British Red Cross has deployed a delegate to support the Mozambique Red Cross after tropical storm Dando caused flooding across six provinces. The delegate will help assess needs and co-ordinate Red Cross relief operations in the country.

The local authorities in Namacurra in Zambezia Province, Mozambique are appealing for urgent humanitarian assistance following the tropical cyclone Funso which hit the coastal areas of the province in the districts of Nicoadala, Pebane, Maganja da Costa, Namacurra, Quelimane and Chinde last month.
