Overview

A cholera outbreak has affected seven regions along the Niger River, which is the source of contamination. The first confirmed cases were recorded in March; by October, 2,130 cases and 50 deaths had been reported. (IFCR, 24 Oct 2011)

Le Niger a connu une crise alimentaire et nutritionnelle aiguë en 2010, suite à une campagne agro-pastorale 2009–2010 déficitaire. La mobilisation du gouvernement, appuyée par ses partenaires techniques et financiers, a permis d’apporter une réponse coordonnée à cette crise et d’éviter une catastrophe humanitaire.

Highlights

NUTRITION

The 2011-2012 agro-pastoral campaign is marked by an important deficit in cereal and forage, and over half of villages in the country have been declared vulnerable to food insecurity. A new food and nutrition crisis now seems inevitable and the Government of Niger is already working on an early emergency response plan in collaboration with its partners. Meanwhile, the number of children treated for Severe Acute Malnutrition (270,924 children as of 20 November 2011) is already well above the expected caseload of 200,000 cases for 2011.

DAKAR, 12 October 2011 (IRIN) - Three simultaneous cholera epidemics have affected 24 countries in West and Central Africa, with 85,000 infections and 2,466 deaths since the beginning of 2011, according to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

DAKAR (AlertNet) – A cholera epidemic sweeping through West and Central Africa has infected more than 85,000 people and killed at least 2,466 since the start of the year, the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by bacteria contaminating food or water, prompting diarrhoea and vomiting. If left untreated, infected people can die of dehydration, sometimes within a matter of hours.
