WAM Abu Dhabi, Dec 15th, 2011 (WAM) -- As per the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and with support from Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Red Crescent has dispatched a cargo plane carrying relief materials for the victims of the recent earthquake that hit eastern Turkey.

Hundreds of people had died or wounded and many were displaced in the disastrous earthquake.

On Sunday 23 October 2011, eastern Turkey was struck by an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, with devastating consequences for the cities of Ercis and Van.

The moment that the official request for help was sent to Belgium, a 14-person B-FAST team was sent to the affected area. This team set up a tent camp that offered shelter to approximately 2,000 victims. Once the mission was complete, this tent camp was handed over to the Turkish Red Crescent.

In the first hours following the October 23 earthquake in the Van region of Turkey, Doctors Worldwide Turkey (DWWT) reacted immediately and deployed its Search and Rescue team composed of 31 volunteers who worked round the clock for 4 days.

Subsequent to the search and rescue phase we implemented an integrated medical support operation to meet the needs of the survivors. All our projects have been designed according to the Earthquake Crisis Centre’s plan of action to optimize efficiency and to coordinate actions with other organizations involved.

I. HIGHLIGHTS

• The Government of Turkey has called for a second international assistance in the form of winterized tents and prefabricated houses to respond to the earthquake which occurred in Van on November 9, 2011.

• Two earthquakes shook Van on November 9, 2011. First one took place at 21:30 at 5.6 magnitude and seven minutes later another tremor with a magnitude of 4.5 hit Van.

• The death toll as a consequence of the November 9 earthquake in Van Province has remained at 40 and number of people rescued under the rubble has amounted to 30.

TURKEY: KEEPING WARM

The distribution of 200 UMCOR-funded heaters came like a “miracle” to earthquake survivors in the villages of Ermisler, Akcift, and 17 remote settlements outside the city of Van in Turkey, according to UMCOR’s implementing partner there, International Blue Crescent (IBC).

Families who received the heaters had lost all their belongings, including livestock and harvests, when earthquakes rocked the region on October 23 and November 9. Most are living in makeshift barracks, tents, or prefabricated compounds near their destroyed or damaged homes.

MSF is extending its work in Turkey in the aftermath of the earthquakes through the provision of mental healthcare.

A team of mental health workers will be working in the villages around Van, carrying out group and individual counselling sessions for both adults and children. MSF will also offer psychological care to refugees and asylum seekers that have been affected by the earthquake and are living in camps and settlements in the area.

In order to meet the all basic needs of disaster victims especially firstly the ones who have no shelter after the earthquakes in Van, it has being continued to transfer these victims to the public facilities in different provinces.

As of today 14.042 disaster victims have been settled in public facilities. The number is more than 20.000 included the Citizens, have applied to relevant Governorships after having departed to other provinces with their own facilities.
