According to the authorities, a cholera epidemic in the Central African Republic has claimed 16 victims, with at least 10 deaths in the southern regions of Ombella-Mpoko and Lobaye, and four cases declared in the capital Bangui (AFP, 8 Oct 2011).

BANGUI and NDIMBA, Central African Republic, 3 February 2012 – Véronique Yassambatendji was awakened late one night in October when her husband began experiencing severe diarrhoea and vomiting. The 30-year-old mother of four brought him directly to the local health centre in Ndimba, where he was treated with oral rehydration salts.

Unfortunately, the treatment was not enough.

CHF 238,333 has been allocated from IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Central African Republic Red Cross National Society (CAR RC) in delivering immediate assistance to some 300,000 families, i.e. about 1,500,000 beneficiaries. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

DAKAR (AlertNet) – A cholera epidemic sweeping through West and Central Africa has infected more than 85,000 people and killed at least 2,466 since the start of the year, the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by bacteria contaminating food or water, prompting diarrhoea and vomiting. If left untreated, infected people can die of dehydration, sometimes within a matter of hours.
