SEOUL, February 21, 2012 (AFP) - South Korea will seek global support at a UN meeting next week for its efforts to rescue North Korean refugees recently arrested in China and facing repatriation, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.
Activists and Seoul lawmakers say about 30 North Koreans will be returned from China to the secretive state even though they face harsh punishment in their homeland.
The South Korean foreign ministry has not confirmed the total figure.
The Working Group expresses its strong objection to the decision of the United Nations Secretariat not to grant a waiver to the 10,700 word limit to the present report, as has been the case for almost every year since such a limit was imposed by the General Assembly in 1993.

SEOUL, Feb 1 (Reuters) - North Korea's capital faces its worst electricity shortages in years just as a new leadership takes power in the impoverished state and pushes ahead with lavish building projects to celebrate the centenary of its founder's birth.

(New York, 25 January 2012): The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC), Valerie Amos, today announced the allocation of some US$104 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to bolster humanitarian operations in 13 neglected humanitarian emergencies around the world: Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Djibouti, Eritrea, Haiti, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Syria.
