BETOU, Republic of Congo, 22 February (UNHCR) – Obed speaks slowly, looking at the ground, as he describes what seemed an idyllic childhood before his family was forced to flee across the nearby river that separates his refugee camp from his homeland.

"When we were living in our country, we had a big house to Libenge, a lot of friends and we played football almost every day. My idol was Ronaldino. My dad was working as a priest, and sometimes as a nurse. My mom was taking care of me and my siblings," said Obed, who is now 14 years old and dreaming of going home.

BRAZZAVILLE, 22 février 2012 (IRIN) - Depuis juin 2011, les autorités sanitaires de la République du Congo ont enregistré 340 cas de choléra, dont neuf cas mortels, dans le département de la Likouala au nord du pays ; elles ont prévenu que la maladie continuait à s'étendre et que certains centres de santé n'avaient pas suffisamment de médicaments pour traiter les malades.

BRAZZAVILLE, 21 February 2012 (IRIN) - Health authorities in the Republic of Congo have recorded 340 cases of cholera, nine of them fatal, since June 2011, in the northern district of Likouala, and have warned that the disease continues to spread and that some health centres lack sufficient treatment.

CHF 60,045 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Congolese Red Cross National Society (NS) in delivering immediate assistance to some 59,120 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and about 40,000 host populations, i.e. an estimated 99,120 beneficiaries. Un-earmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

BETOU, Republic of the Congo, February 16 (UNHCR) – She looks like an adolescent, but at 25 years of age, Odette already has five children of her own. The sixth will arrive next month, and she is hoping it will not be born in a refugee camp.

Angola - En partenariat avec le HCR, l'OIM a repris, depuis le 20 janvier 2012, les opérations d'aide au retour volontaire de 53 370 réfugiés angolais qui doivent être rapatriés cette année, sur 176 000 personnes toujours présentes en République démocratique du Congo (RDC), en Zambie, en Namibie, en République du Congo et au Botswana, près de 10 ans après la fin de la guerre civile en Angola.

IOM, in partnership with UNHCR, has resumed, since January 20th, 2012, the provision of voluntary return assistance to 53,370 Angolan refugees scheduled to be repatriated this year, out of 176, 000 persons still in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia, Namibia, Republic of Congo and Botswana, almost ten years since the end of the civil war in Angola.

Brazzaville (CICR) – Le bureau du Comité international de la Croix-Rouge (CICR) en République du Congo à Impfondo vient de fermer ses portes dans le département de la Likouala (nord-est du pays).

Suite à l'arrivée de quelque 110 000 réfugiés originaires de la province de l'Équateur (République démocratique du Congo) en octobre 2009, le CICR avait ouvert cette structure en décembre 2010 afin de réunir les familles séparées et de prévenir les risques d'épuisement des réserves de nourriture pour les 100 000 habitants de cette région.

ICRC closes office in Impfondo

Brazzaville (ICRC) – The office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Impfondo, in the department of Likouala in the north-east of the Republic of the Congo, has just closed its doors.

The ICRC opened the office in December 2010, following the arrival in October 2009 of nearly 110,000 refugees from Equator province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to reunite dispersed families and to ward off any risk of food stocks being exhausted for the 100,000 residents in the area.

• Au Sud-Kivu, 5.042 réfugiés rwandais ont été enregistrés au cours d'un exercice de recensement effectué avec la Commission Nationale pour les réfugiés dans six territoires (Kabare, Kalehe, Mwenga, Shabunda et Walungu). 56% sont des femmes, 33% des enfants âgés de 5-17 ans. Les territoires de Shabunda/Bakisi, Mwenga/Itombwe et de Kalehe/Bahavu ont enregistré les chiffres les plus élevés de réfugiés. 74% des 5.042 interrogés ont indiqué leur intention de vouloir retourner chez eux.

UNHCR operational highlights

• In South Kivu, a total of 5,042 Rwandan refugees have been registered during the census exercise conducted with the National Commission for refugees in 5 territories (Kabare, Kalehe, Mwenga, Shabunda and Walungu). Among them, 56% are women, 33% are children aged 5-17 years. Shabunda/Bakisi, Mwenga/Itombwe and Kalehe/Bahavu Territories have registered the highest refugee figures. Some 74% out of the 5,042 interviewed indicated their intention to return home.

For many years, the countries of Central Africa have been suffering from the effects of epidemics and endemic diseases, as well as natural and man-made disasters. Conflicts have led to significant population displacements and put at further risk vulnerable groups that are already challenged to provide for themselves. Recently, the increasingly high cost of living has added a further burden to Central African populations.

In a press conference held on 31th January, 2012 extensively covered by the Congolese media. Ambassador of Egypt to Congo, Khaled Omran delivered pharmaceutical aid of five tons of medicines and hospital needs to the Congolese Minister of health.

Summary: CHF 188,083 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 25 October 2011 to support the Congolese Red Cross National Society in delivering assistance to some 750,000 beneficiaries.
