Lebanon: LAF and UNIFIL conduct joint exercise in natural disaster response

Naqoura, Lebanon - An exercise in large-scale disaster response was conducted on 10-11 August jointly by the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in cooperation with a number of government and non-government organizations in the village of Srifa in south Lebanon.

The two-day exercise entitled "United Beacon" was based on a fictitious scenario of an earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale, resulting in several casualties in southern Lebanon.

Moderate earthquake rocks Middle East countries

Tel Aviv/Amman (dpa) - A moderate earthquake rocked countries in the Middle East on Wednesday, shaking buildings and sending people running into the streets in panic.
There were no reports of serious casualties or serious damage from the mid-morning tremor, which was felt in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

The epicentre of the quake was in the northern Dead Sea region, bordering Israel and Jordan, Israeli radio reports said.

Earthquake shakes buildings from Amman to Gaza

JERUSALEM, Feb 11 (AFP) - A strong earth tremor shook the Middle East Wednesday, being felt from the Jordanian capital to Gaza City and sparking instances of panic but no casualties, correspondents reported.
Israel's public radio, quoting seismologists, said the quake, which occurred at around 0810 GMT, measured 4.5 degrees on the Richter scale, with the epicentre north of the Dead Sea.

In Amman employees rushed out of their offices into the street as buildings shook, and telephone lines were disrupted.

In Jerusalem buildings were evacuated
