Save the Children welcomes the announcement by Minister Carr to increase humanitarian aid to the Sahel region of West Africa where 13 million people are at risk of severe hunger.

The announcement lifts the Australian Government’s aid package to humanitarian relief organisations responding to the West Africa food crisis to $20 million, still way short of the $128 million contributed by the Australian Government to help tackle last year’s food crisis on the other side of the continent in the Horn of Africa.

NEW YORK, USA, 21 May 2012 – As aid agencies warn of a major funding shortage for the crisis in the Sahel, actor and UNICEF Ambassador Ewan McGregor has added his voice to those calling for more help for the region.

March 2012: Actor and UNICEF Ambassador Ewan McGregor delivers a public service announcement appealing for aid for children affected by the Sahel food crisis.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr announced today that Australia will contribute an additional $16 million in much needed food and emergency medical assistance to respond to two major escalating crises in Africa.

Senator Carr said the money will assist millions of people affected by drought, local conflict, and the collapse of local markets.

"The food crises in West Africa and South Sudan are escalating at an alarming rate," Senator Carr said.

LONDON, 16 May 2012 (IRIN) - The past decade has seen great advances in child survival, but while toddlers and small children are benefiting, the death rate for new-born babies remains stubbornly high. Now a new report suggests that paying more attention to their mothers’ health, and focusing on certain damaging but treatable diseases, could be one key to tackling neonatal mortality.

Il y a risque de perdre une occasion d’aider

Pictures of starving children give donors an instant justification to release aid. Predictions of starvation, however accurate, do not

After the hunger crisis that engulfed east Africa last summer, there was plenty for the world to think about. After all, we'd been warned it was coming – the first alerts of a potential crisis came the previous year. But not enough was done to avert it, and we now know that failure cost tens of thousands of lives and millions of dollars in aid money.

Nine nations and more than 15 million men, women and children are on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe as severe droughts, poor harvests, conflict and rising food prices cripple West Africa.

In 2011, with support from the Australian Government and the Australian community, over $7 million was raised for our East Africa appeal.

In 2012, another crisis has been looming in recent months with the nations of Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Chad, Mauritania, northern Nigeria and northern Cameroon now facing severe food insecurity.

Executive summary/highlights

• Food prices are continuing to rise further aggravating food insecurity. This was confirmed in the recent analysis of the food and nutrition security outlook to June 2012 by the West African regional organisation CILSS (Comité permanent Inter-État de Lutte contre la Sécheresse au Sahel). The crisis is expected to reach Phase 41 (Extreme) in many parts of Mauritania, Mali, Chad and possibly Phase 5 (famine) in isolated conflict areas of northern Mali.
