  1. According to ANDMA, preliminary information indicate that 2 persons have died and 40 houses destroyed as a result of flash floods that occurred in the afternoon of 25 May in Kariz village of Gosfandi District, Sari Pul Province,

  2. ANDMA has also informed that though there was heavy rainfall in Sari Pul City late in the afternoon, flooding was not reported.

May 24, 2012 - About 900 returnees in Northern Bahr El-Ghazal State received land certificates from the state government today at a ceremony held in Apada, a returnee settlement area near the capital Aweil.

Governor Lt. Gen. Paul Malong Awan officially launched the initiative, which transfers land to resettle about 1,250 households in Nyalat, about 6 kilometres west of Aweil. The layout plans include residential plots, with a provision for public utilities, social and community facilities.

When Nonelyn Sabas’ son was born, he was very sick. The doctors were not sure if he would live more than a few days. They said that it might have been caused by her fatigue from living in a tent for the last 3 months, or perhaps it was the contaminated water she drank on the night of December 16, 2011. Nonelyn would never forget that night when Typhoon Washi triggered a flash flood that ripped through the heart of the city, killing more than a thousand and leaving tens of thousands homeless, including Nonelyn and her family.

As family disagreements go, the issue over Kenichi Sakuma’s beautifully cultivated traditional Japanese garden, seems gentle and good humoured by any standards. But it just may be emblematic of the tensions and splits which are being engendered as this community tries to get back to some semblance of normal life.

Surveying the perfectly positioned rocks and flowering trees and bushes, Mr. Sakuma, 66, says with his guffawing laugh: “It’s taken me years to get it this way! I couldn’t bear to see it torn up and flattened.”

May 25, 2012 (JUBA) - A total of 900 South Sudanese returnees could hardly hide their joy after the Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal on Thursday announced the transfer of about 500m² of land meant to resettle about 1,250 households in Nyalat, located about 6km west of Aweil, the state capital.

Nairobi, 25 May 2012 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga, briefed the press today on the recent progress on the Somalia political process. The SRSG had just returned from three days of meetings and deliberations in Addis Ababa with the principal signatories of Roadmap for the End of Transition in Somalia. The meeting cleared many of the obstacles that have blocked the drafting and adoption of the provisional new Somali constitution and ending the transitional period on 20 August this year.

HAVANA, May 24, 2012 (IPS) - In Los Palacios, a farming community in the western Cuban province of Pinar del Río, local residents are still working hard to rebuild after the damage caused by two of the three hurricanes that hit this country in 2008. "It was just horrible," people here say when asked about what happened.

Situation Overview

A 5.7 Richter scale earthquake occurred on the night of May 13th, 2012 in the Rasht valley, central Tajikistan. The earthquake affected the three districts of Nurabad, Rasht and Tavildara (at least 12 villages), killing 2 and affecting an estimated 2,531 people - residents of the 86 destroyed and 276 damaged residential buildings.

Assessments are still underway (due to the isolated and mountainous area of the disaster) by the district-level Commissions on Emergency Situations and the damage information is still subject to change.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent’s (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by IFRC in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of IFRC’s disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters.

Summary

This report is a joint effort between the Bureau of Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR) and the Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean (RBLAC) seeking to compile the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s work in the areas of Conflict Prevention and Citizen Security during the first decade of the 21st century in Latin America and the Caribbean region.

Overview

Millions of people living in the Baro-Akobo-Sobat (BAS) area of the Nile Basin are to benefit from a range of multi-purpose water resources projects to be planned by the Nile Basin Initiative. On May 4, the African Development Bank approved a €2 million grant from the African Water Facility to finance the development study needed to attract the investments required to implement them. The overall project is supported jointly by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development- Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD-IPPF).

The UK is engaged in Afghanistan as part of a 50-nation coalition to prevent international terrorists, including Al Qaeda, from again using Afghanistan as a base from which to operate, threatening our security and that of the region.

The Government has committed itself to keeping Parliament informed about developments in Afghanistan on a monthly basis. This seventeenth report covers progress in April 2012. It reflects the combined assessment of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Department for International Development.
