Mogadishu-May 23rd 2012: The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces have made significant progress in the last 24 hours towards Afgoye town. Afgoye has been for a long time a stronghold of the Al-Qaeda backed Al-Shabaab insurgents and is a strategic junction for routes to the north, west and south of Somalia.

“Operation Free Shabelle” started yesterday with the objective of bringing security to the 400,000 people of the Afgoye corridor, and area north-west of Mogadishu with the largest concentration of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in the world.

The Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission Country-Specific Configuration to Liberia, Ambassador Staffan Tillander, with his delegation comprising a representative of the UN Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), has visited Grand Cape Mount and Bong Counties as part of his first official visit to Liberia since his appointment in April 2012.

FREETOWN, May 23, 2012 (AFP) - A 15-member UN Security Council delegation paid a visit to Sierra Leone on Wednesday for talks with government on progress since the end of one of Africa's bloodiest conflicts a decade ago.

"We shall be discussing various issues including the post conflict situation, consolidation of the peace process as well as national reconciliation," Information Minister Ibrahim Kargbo told AFP.

Among the 11 points agreed between Burmese government peace negotiators and leaders of the Shan State Army (SSA) last weekend is a landmark decision to resettle all displaced Shan families and civilians in southern Shan State, and perhaps those currently living along the border with Thailand.

The agreement was reached at a Union-level meeting on May 19 between a delegation from Naypyidaw, led by Deputy Commander-in-Chief Gen Soe Win, and leaders of the SSA led by Lt-Gen Yawd Serk.

What is your job at ActionAid?

I work as a Programme Co-ordinator at ActionAid Uganda. I work in Kapchorwa district, eastern Uganda, amongst communities that have been affected by pastoral tribal conflicts related to violent, organised cattle thefts and raids.

Can you tell us about the village of Giriki, one of the areas where you are working?

The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping, strongly condemns the physical attack by demonstrators against the interim President of the Republic of Mali, Mr. Dioncounda Traore.

This unacceptable act is a cause of deep concern for the AU, and undermines the internationally-supported ECOWAS efforts toward effective restoration of constitutional order and reestablishment of state authority in the northern part of the country.

The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Prof Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has condemned the physical assault on 21st May 2012, on HE. Mr Dioncounda Traore, the Interim President of the Republic of Mali, by protesters who broke into the presidential palace in the capital, Bamako.

Prof Ihsanoglu who expressed dismay at the violence targeting the Interim President on the eve of a political accord brokered by ECOWAS on the political transition in Mali, called for calm and restraint by all sides.

ADDIS ABABA - The United Nations special envoy for Somalia says the "Road Map" peace deal signed last September is on track to produce a breakthrough in ending the Horn of Africa country's 20-year political vacuum.

It won't be easy, but three months before the end of the U.N.-backed transitional government, leaders of Somalia's fractious political entities seem committed to working together in a post-transition arrangement. U.N. special envoy for Somalia Augustine Mahiga said if it holds together, this could be historic.

KATHMANDU, May 23, 2012 (AFP) - Four years after elections ended centuries of royal rule, lawmakers in Nepal are scrambling to complete a constitution amid widespread doubt that the troubled nation is on the road to lasting peace.

Once a Hindu monarchy, the country has evolved into a secular democracy and the new constitution should be a key step towards healing rifts that led to the bloody 1996-2006 civil war between Maoist rebels and the state.

BISSAU, May 23, 2012 (AFP) - The transitional authorities in Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday formed a new government that includes an army officer who participated in the country's latest coup on April 12.

President Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo signed a decree establishing the 27-member cabinet which includes as defence minister Colonel Celestino Carvalho, a member of the putschists who ousted the president.

· An agreement between Malian authorities and ECOWAS mediators extends the mandate of interim President Traoré and mandates a one-year transition to civilian rule.

· The number of estimated IDPs in Mali has increased to 150,460 after new assessments were conducted in Mopti cercles. A monitoring and identification system is being developed to enable more accurate IDP assessments.

· According to the Government of Mali, 1.76 million people are affected by food insecurity in the north,including Segou and Mopti regions.

22 May 2012 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned today an attack against Mali’s interim President Dioncounda Traoré, which reportedly left the leader with head injuries.

“The Secretary-General urges the Malian military and security institutions to fulfil their primary function of protecting the State and its legitimate interim authorities, and underscores the need for those responsible for the attack to be held accountable,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement.
