Soil carbon assessment is key to reducing emissions

16 May, 2012, Rome – FAO is helping scientists and policymakers in Tanzania to evaluate how much carbon is stored in forests and forests soils, which will enable them to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Forest soils contain a huge carbon stock. Deforestation, forest degradation or changes in forest management practices can release carbon from soil to the atmosphere, thus contributing to climate change. For these reasons reliable estimates of soil carbon stock and stock changes are important.

Measures enhancing food security to be considered

15 May 2012, Rome - Measures to improve regional food security by cutting food losses and waste and by mitigating and adapting to climate change will be considered by FAO’s Regional Conference for the Near East.

The objective of the KU-CFSVA was to analyze the food security, nutritional status and vulnerability of the urban population of Kenya, to provide baseline information to the policy-makers and practitioners, and to identify interventions. For the purpose of this study, high-density, low-income urban areas only were considered.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A new food and nutrition crisis is affecting millions of people across the Sahel Region of Western Africa this year, due to a combination of drought, high grain prices, decrease in remittances, environmental degradation, displacement of population coupled with chronic poverty and vulnerability.

  • More than 18 million people are facing food insecurity and more than 1 million children under the age of five are at risk of severe acute malnutrition.

Harvesting of the 2011/12 main season cereal crops is underway across Southern Africa and is expected to continue until June/July. Current crop prospects point to a slight decrease in maize production (the main food staple) compared to 2011, following a contraction in the area planted and a protracted dry spell in early 2012.
